Ash stood slowly, every inch of him coiled grace and restrained power. He didn’t reach for me, but he might as well have. His gaze was a touch. A pull. “I’ll admit,” he murmured, stepping closer, “I had hoped you’d choose the black one. But you’re right. This one has more fabric.”

The surrounding ruins swallowed the sound he made, a final rasp of defiance or pain. Then there was silence, Akira’s body limp beneath Asher’s blood-soaked paws. Breathing heavily, Asher shifted back into his human form, his skin smeared in crimson, hair wild, chest still heaving. He looked down at Akira, lifeless, and let out a guttural scream. Fury still pulsed through him, and he wished Akira would awaken, so he could kill him again for every person whom he killed that he loved. But he was forever still, and it was over. It was time to find Makena and claim his birthright.

I have to run. But an unnatural weigh settled over me, anchoring my boots to the marble. Blair’s dark brown eyes danced with feverish excitement.
