The crack blazed brighter than ever. For a long moment no one moved. The clearing was silent except for the hiss of the crack in the marker and the distant retreat of paws through underbrush. She dialed a number on FaceTime with her expensive smartphone. “Pick up,pick up…” she muttered under her breath , as she stared intensely at the phone screen. Finally, the line connected and a mud age woman popped up, only her face was visible to the camera but one could tell that she was an elite , respected woman. “Hello Anastasia ” her refined voice came through the phone. Anastasia’s face instantly changed to a sorrowful one and she even managed to burst into tears.

The metal groaned and snapped as the ash clogged its engines, sending the massive ship spiraling into the cliffs.

I quickly realized what he was about to do and pleaded. “Don’t think about throwing his ashes away, Justin…” Before I could finish, Justin flipped the box and the ashes spilled through the air. I dropped to my belly and crawled beneath him, letting the ashes rain down on me. “Stop, Justin! Please don’t throw my baby’s ashes away…” I cried out. “This is the only way I can remember him forever. Please don’t do this!” My sobs fell on deaf ears. Justin emptied the box onto me and threw it at my body.

I whispered, the words tasting like ash. I closed my eyes so I wouldn’t have to see their faces. I released the golden light. It was a soft, warm wave, a final mercy that felt like a betrayal. When the light faded and I opened my eyes, the space in front of me was empty. Five piles of fine white ash were all that remained of five heroes.
