His eyes moved between Sinclair and me, and if I didn't look closely, I could have sworn that my eyes were making fun of me. Rowan looked like he wanted to raze everything to the ground, but the stillness of his voice said otherwise.

Flashback – Almost Four Years Ago The scent of rain clung to my skin, heavy and clean, as I stepped beneath the archway of wild vines. Shifted my gaze down to Amara who was still watching me with those silver eyes, rabbit now dangling from one hand. I crouched down. Heard Athena go very still above me but she didn’t move. Up close Amara was even more disarming. She had Athena’s coloring, the red hair, the shape of her face, but those eyes were mine and she used them the same way I’d been told I used mine, like she was taking inventory. “Hi.” I said. She considered this greeting for a moment. “Hi.” “I’m Rowan.” “I know.” She said it like this was obvious, which meant Athena had said something in the past three days. The knowledge settled somewhere in my chest strangely.
