“I’ve been thinking about our project nonstop.” William gestured for her to sit, his enthusiasm contagious. “I brought some recordings I’ve been working on. I think you’ll find them inspiring.” As she settled in, he handed her a pair of headphones, excitement radiating from him. “Let’s start with this one.” Polaris put the headphones on, and as the sound washed over her, she was instantly captivated. I woke up startled. Rubbing on my eyes furiously, I opened them and glanced at the time. It was a little past midnight. I just had the craziest dream... I was in a car and I just kept hearing the cry of a baby. There was no child in the vehicle when I looked but it would not stop ringing in my ears. So I stopped the car and looked everywhere for where the cry was coming from and could not find anything. I walked further into what seemed like a park and found a cradle. The sound seemed like it was coming from there and just as I was about to get to the cot, I woke up.

But everything looked the same as it had before, and I tried to convince myself that I had just imagined the noise. I made my way back to my reading table, my feet moving on autopilot as my mind raced, heart beating irregularly, ears strained, my senses on high alert, waiting to hear or see if the noise would repeat itself. As my fingers danced over the keys of my laptop, a sudden, loud groan ripped through the silence of the room, the eerie sound causing my heart to jump into my throat. I froze, my breath catching, as I listened to the low, almost animalistic groan echo around the room, followed by a series of smaller, pained whimpers that sent chills racing down my spine.
