~CAKE~ I wake up to breathing. Wet, shallow breathing. It’s close. Too close. Like someone is lying beside me, fighting for air. That sound, that exact sound. The hollow wheeze from last night. The way his lungs kept trying. The way his body wouldn’t give up even when it should have. I sit up too fast, heart slamming into my ribs. No one is here. I glance at the clock by my bedside. 4:15 a.m

I got wheezing like an asthma patient, I shut the door and fell to the ground with my hands on my chest. "What's happening to me?" I breathed with a cracked voice. I remained in that position unable to steady my breathing. My eyes were twinkling rapidly, I straightened my legs and squeezed my eyes shut. Seconds later, I realized a sharp breath. Then, my breathing returned to normal. I choked a little as I stood up from the floor. I fell to the bed before reaching the edge feeling stiff, I wanted to remain in this position for a really long time. *****

She leaned forward, one hand propped on the bed while another holding her red popping neck with sweat covered her whole body. “Breath… breath…” “Huuk! Huuuk! Huuk!” She wheezed out, her chest felt like it was crushed by a car. Her lungs felt like they were on fire, it blocked her airway. “Breath… breath…” A rough palm rubbed her back gently. “Breath…” The voice asked her kindly. “Huuk… huuk… I can’t. I can’t.” The tears rolled down her cheeks. “I can’t.” Her fingers curled on the mattress fumbled it tightly.

"Follow along with my breathing. Take in a breath for five seconds, and then breathe out for five seconds. I'll count it out. Breathe in one two three four five Breathe out one two three four five Breathe in one two three four five Breathe out one two three four five Breathe in one two three four five Breathe out one two three four five Just like that." [Erin] A piercing, petrified shriek penetrates the depths of my eardrums, jolting me out of my brief slumber. In the background, the sound of running water slapping against the marbled floor resounded. The bleach white wall blurred in my vision as my lids fluttered open. My nose immediately stings as I try to take a deep breath, but instead of air, water rushes into my nasal passages, instantly wheezing as I gasp for air.

Wheezing a couple of times, I began to feel really hot and was sweating all over, my teeth clattering. I banged on the door again, using up all of my strength. Slumping on the floor, I hit my head and began feeling dizzy, the room going round in circles in my face. But I still didn't want to give up just yet. I managed to kick the door feebly before I got enveloped in a cloud of darkness.

"Uh, uh-uh-uh..." There was a strange ringing sound in my ears, and for a moment I thought it was a hallucination; it sounded like the movement of tree branches shaking and crashing against each other, and like the sound of a knife cutting through a curtain, and like the noise of nails scratching a blackboard, unpleasant and appalling. After listening to it, I finally realized in a daze that it was my own huffing and puffing sound. I couldn't control it, my entire respiratory system was like a leaky motor, revving faster and faster, on the verge of falling apart.

“Stop being a dumbass and get your emotions in check.” I choked on my tears, my chest began to feel heavy. I wasn’t getting enough air anymore. I struggled to suck in air. I gripped my chest, widening my mouth to draw in more air. “What’s wrong, darling?” The Luna, immediately concerned, stooped before me. I couldn’t talk, just kept wheezing. “Oh my goodness, she’s growing red in the face.” Katherina’s voice shook badly. “She’s not fine. She’s not breathing properly. What’s happening to her?! Someone, call the doctor!”

My shoulders were jerking with every breath, each inhale shallow and sharp, each exhale accompanied by a faint, broken wheeze. I lost my balance and nearly folded forward. Adrian reacted on instinct, crouching down and gripping my arm to keep me from collapsing completely. “Is it really that bad?” he asked, his voice noticeably lower now, uncertainty bleeding through the edge of impatience. My mouth opened—but no sound came out, only a thin, strained gasp that burned all the way down my throat.

My voice sounds hoarse and breathy and my throat burns, feeling constrained as if I ate something that went down the wrong pipe. Seeing me struggle for breath, he shouts... "Are you crazy!? What the fuck are you talking about? Look at the way you're breathing!" "No, I'm not– crazy," I reply, trying to make him see reason. He's right about the way I'm breathing though but how do I make him understand that I'm gasping for air, not because I'm dying but because of my burning throat? "Relax man! I can't— talk through the mask..." I wheeze.
