It was a book they had read countless times, but each time, it held a new magic, a new wonder for Theo. “Once upon a time,” Hazel began, her voice soft and soothing, “there was a little bear named Barnaby who loved to go on adventures.” Theo’s eyes widened, his attention captivated by the story. He listened intently, his tiny fingers tracing the illustrations, his imagination soaring with each word Hazel spoke. The story of Barnaby the bear, his adventures in the forest, his encounters with talking squirrels and mischievous rabbits, filled the room with a sense of magic and wonder. Theo giggled at Barnaby’s antics, his heart filled with joy.

“It’s just hard. Audiobooks make it easier.” He nodded but didn’t say anything. He just stood there awkwardly shifting his weight from one foot to the other. His mouth opened and closed a couple of times before there finally were some words that left his lips. “I don’t think we have any audiobooks,” he confessed, nervously rubbing the back of his neck. “But if you make me a list of what you need, I can see if there are any online, and I’ll buy them for you.”

When no sound came from the speakers Eva turned the knob making the volume rise all the way. Still nothing. Frustrated Eva ejected the tray and flipped the CD. She once again pushed the tray in and this time there was a slight hum to it. Eva walked to her windowsill and waited for the audiobook to start. "Oh! Fuck me! Oh yeah! Ah! Ahh!" The loud sounds of moaning and groaning filled the quiet Library scaring Eva half to death. THIS WAS NOT AN AUDIOBOOK!

I discovered a great deal about Samuel during our little adventure together, and the experience was nothing short of enlightening. For one, I quickly realized just how incredibly sharp he was. He proudly shared with Tristan what he had been listening to on his phone—an audiobook titled “Washington: A Life” by Ron Chernow. I remembered grappling with that book during my senior year of high school at seventeen. Yet here was Samuel, just nine years old, diving deep into material that had only come to me much later in life.

As we headed home, a voice in my head, one that wasn't my wolf this time, began to think I might be moving toward something deeper than just liking him. ​The drive back was a mix of happy and sad, but we kept it fun regardless. We pulled over at a gas station halfway through Georgia and picked up enough snacks, sweets, and drinks to put a whole class of kids into a sugar crash. We shared our favorite tracks and listened to a good chunk of the first Harry Potter audiobook. It felt like a wonderful dream I never wanted to wake up from.

All that was gone. One stupid mistake of a witch had cost them everything and I had gone and repeated the same mistake. I sighed, studying the hallway we were walking through. It was dusty and covered in cobwebs. I doubted if anyone came there. Aaron unlocked the door and kicked it open. That wasn't a good sign. The room was filthy and everything was covered in cobwebs. The broken bottles of elixirs and moldy spell books told me all I needed to know. The room had belonged to a witch.
