Something else. Something that stayed inside me now like a flame. I leaned back against the wall and let my eyes close for a short breath. Tomorrow I would see him. Tomorrow truths would stand between us with no room to hide behind storms or danger. The academy was safe tonight. Aaran home. Council satisfied. Friends alive. But under that safety, something new moved like a current under ice. Awakening does not return to sleep. Power once recognized is never unseen again. And the world had seen me now.

Chapter 2: Welcome to Wonderland ───── ❝R U B Y F R I D A Y ' S P O V❞ ──── As if thousand of needles pricked my throat, I woke up startled. My breathing came into my consciousness and it sounded like I just suddenly emerged from a tidal wave. I automatically sat up as alertness from sleeping in open spaces kicked in. But a quick roam of my eyes told me I wasn't in the same cold, crimson place earlier- the academy's gate.

I had never seen the Ultara Academy at night before. The forest that had always surrounded the school disappeared into the haunting darkness. It was as if the trees shifted in place and buildings appeared much taller and darker. I had to pause and absorb the whole layout of the school in detail. There were lights glowing out of every room inside the mansions. Probably the lights in the Ultara Academy had never been turned off. In the hard stone walls, those young geniuses would stay overnight to study like hundreds of years ago.

none of us want to stay here and growing up is the only way out. Your Awakening is a bit like graduation in a sense. A passing from child to adult and normally where you would find your place, your rank, in the pack, and get a mate. Third Person’s POV “It happened thirteen days ago, sir. The girl turned nineteen and that’s when her awakening happened. The academy tried hard to keep this confidential but they could no longer control it,” a middle aged man reported. The man in a white coat fixed his glasses. “Understood. Lorcé Callora you say? Callora. Callora. Hmmn. Interesting.” “A Callora who had no abilities and experienced a late awakening?” Another man approached. The man in a white coat nodded in amusement. “Yes, yes. A rare gem. We’ve got to have a hold on this matter. And as Examiners, the academy should allow it, don’t you think?” A dangerous smirk coming off from his lips.

Before I could start to cry, Gabe ran out, all legs and arms and thick curly hair, and helped me up. "You'll be okay," he'd said, brushing off my knees. "Shake it off." "The academy is a place for them to learn about the supernatural, train, and gain strength. They've been learning - though they didn't know it at first - how to help, hunt, and kill supernatural creatures of all kinds in case any of them came after my boys or, more specifically, you." I lifted my glass to take a drink and stiffened. "Why would anything else be after me?"

“Nothing about this is normal.” Silence falls. Cane exhales slowly. “She’s closer than we thought,” he mutters. “Closer to what?” I snap. Gunnar’s eyes lock onto mine. “Awakening,” he says. The word sends a chill through me. “What does that even mean?” I whisper. “It means,” Caden says carefully, “that what you are has been sleeping for a long time.”
