This Awakening wasn't the first one to occur, in fact it was the third Awakening, but it was the first in which Alicia had been either killed or captured. She remembered waking up on her home world the day of the Awakening, hearing the call that had been sent out through the Space-time Continuum. She didn't feel that electric like feeling she normally did, the presence of her abilities was there, but she felt fractured somehow. Almost as if she had awoken in a body that had been sabotaged upon her arrival. None of the Awakenings had been like this one, she felt wounded. “It feels like a part of me is missing, and I don’t know how to fix it.” Ellara stopped pacing and turned to face Zoe. “Awakening a dormant nature, particularly one tied to something as complex as vampirism, is no small feat. It requires a catalyst - something to ignite that aspect of your soul. And it must be done carefully. Vampiric energy is deeply tied to blood, life force, and often the darkness within one’s own heart. Awakening it too abruptly could destabilize you entirely.” Zoe swallowed hard, the weight of Ellara’s words sinking in. “So, what can I do? How can I awaken it safely?”

When she turned around with a huge grin and gave them a thumbs-up sign, the others breathed sighs of relief. “Perfect.” Mary nodded. “Is everyone in position?” She asked and then gave an encouraging nod when she saw the remaining two warlocks chanting to channel strength to their team. “The dogs are ready to move in,” Mario responded. “Waiting for your command to shift.” “Good.” Mary started for where the rogues stood waiting on her. “Sally, get the witches ready.” She called over her shoulders. “They move in five minutes after the wolves. Then we move in.”

As the recently chosen Protector, I knew I had to show power and unity, even though I had doubts inside. Just as I was about to call the meeting to order, Asher's team returned. They are half-carried, half-dragged a wild-eyed werewolf between them. “We caught him near the border,” Asher reported. “He keeps babbling about something called 'the awakening.'” The captured werewolf's eyes rolled wildly, focusing on nothing. “It comes,” he muttered, his voice raspy and strained. “The awakening… the old powers… returning…” Then he collapsed, unconscious.

A crawling pressure climbed up my ribs, hot and cold all at once. My vision blurred, and a violent pulse throbbed at the base of my skull. I squeezed my eyes shut, but that only made everything sharper, the movement under my skin, the tightening around my lungs, the whispering sensation spreading through my veins.

"What is the sacrifice?" "Blood." I grasped for the dagger— The moment my fingers touched it— Pain exploded through my chest. I shrieked, collapsing. Memories burst through my mind. Ronan's magic. Magnus's sadistic smile. Derek dying in my arms. No. The pain threatened to consume me. No! I grasped the dagger and sliced my palm. Silver light exploded. A voice whispered— "You are ready." I float in a void, the star's core a throbbing heart of gold. Visions bombard me-a trillion timelines where I accepted the Architects' offer, becoming a god, a destroyer, a slave. A figure emerges from the light. **Kael**, whole and unbroken, his rifle slung over his shoulder. "You're not real," I say.

Keeping similar alignments together reduces the chances of students murdering each other in their sleep. I show my badge to the Head Warden. "Room 306," she grunts. She looks at Arlo. "Room 206." "Wait, we're in the same building?" Arlo asks, blushing slightly. "Boys and girls are mixed?" "Obviously," the Warden snorts. "This isn't a monastery, kid." It makes sense. In this world, Awakeners are just hormone-crazed batteries leaking divine energy. If you bottle that up, people go insane and start destroying things.

“Evie—Evie, please, come back—don’t leave me—” The Awakening slams into me, one final time. White-hot power detonates beneath my skin, a supernova burning through every cell.
