To her, the name Lyn had felt too monotone and cold. She had wished that in her next life, her name would carry extra letters, to sound more complete. For that very reason, she named him Azael, because he was born , out from the crack of an egg shell, with an unknown origin. To her, that name symbolized strength and divine power. She believed he was either a fallen angel, a wilderness spirit, or an anomaly, since his origin was unknown, obscure in mist and fog — something even she, the holy maiden, couldn't foretell.

I now know that this was the work of The Keepers. His name, Azrael, meant Angel of Death. This was not a lie. The amount of havoc he and Andres wreaked after splitting, was insane. Before that, and this was hundreds of years ago, we crossed paths. Azrael was on a mission to collect ingredients for his split. None of us knew exactly what he was doing at the time, but he was very determined to get things done. I was seeing a woman back then. He looked back over his shoulder toward the path we had taken. "We’ve been out here for too long. Let's stop here for today. We'll go back to the hideout and wait until tomorrow, and then I'll figure out something else. Sniffing the lab out won't work."

ZADOK “Alpha Cole sent in another letter,” Azriel said, closing the doors behind him. “He is requesting a response on whether you would honour his invitation.” He sat in front of me, “What do we do?” I smiled in my seat. It’s been a while since I’ve seen Azriel this stressed about something, or perhaps I was too self-absorbed to care these past few years. “Come in, Azriel. I didn’t realise you’ve been knocking that long.” I joked and he rolled his eyes.

I didn’t mean to, I admitted, my voice quieter than I wanted it to be. That’s what worries me. My chest tightened. I wrapped my arms around myself, trying to ground the feeling still coursing through me. Azrael… what did it mean? I asked. His jaw tightened slightly. It means this is bigger than war. A pause. His gaze hardened as he looked out into the distance, toward the dark horizon beyond the territory. “It means you’re becoming something even the gods didn’t plan for.” The words settled heavily between us.
