She reached out to grab me. But I stepped back and let her hand close on nothing. Then I pulled the documents from my bag, held them up in front of her, and let her take a good look.
"Mom, you've always told me that Dad can't stand me, that he'd be happier if I just disappeared. So if he hates me that much, why would he buy me a car like this for my birthday?"
