Still, Gagnon Autos—a company on its last breath and flailing for help—now had his name on it.

"You delve into how this sector makes billions in profits off over billing incarcerated families, starting from the companies that supply food and hygiene products, making two point one billion from poor communities that have got no choice but to fund their loved ones' accounts in prison for them to purchase basic necessities. To the healthcare companies that benefit from inmates eating heavily processed snacks instead of healthy food portions by providing these sick inmates with chronic medical conditions over the counter vitamins, which they have got to pay for, and then to the telecom companies that rake in one point two billion for inmates to make phone calls and video calls."

It was said that each ward was specific to the type of crime committed, but everyone knew that in fact they only existed to separate inmates with money from those who were just trained, and from those who were common. I was located with the worst of the worst. Those who gave up their studies when they realized that crime paid off much more. Those who killed and dismembered without pity. Those who made the mistake of bragging about their heinous crimes during a card game in a bar and were caught. I was the least likely to have done something serious, even so, some respected me for the mystery that involved my entire prison.

"So Ophelia is offering charity to the cousin who tried to have her killed? That's either incredibly generous or incredibly condescending." "Ms. Sterling, the program is available to all eligible inmates regardless of their relationship to the Sterling family. Maybe I'm perfectly happy being the family disgrace rotting in federal prison." The lawyer studied my file before responding. When we approached the Prison booth, we could already see a couple of people inside the jail cells and a long line of people waiting to bail out their partners. The prison booth occurs every three hours and closes at 11 PM; We can see Richard walking away from the booth table and Natalie opening the cell and letting out a person after receiving a donation.

But this feature made him only more powerful in my eyes. “Alright, you want to make a deal? I can make a deal with you. I will give your father a full year to pay of his debt to me… Meanwhile you are to stay here as my pet, my toy to play with when I am bored. I have a busy life and I would like someone to entertain me and release me from tiresome stress. There will conditions of course to this deal, you so desperately wanted may I add. If your father screws up in any way he is killed and you are to stay here indefinitely and if you screw up your father gets killed and you are to stay here indefinitely as well. Both ways you have the same outcome, it just depends on who can’t hold up their p

“I’ll still pay triple.” The two guys on either side of me looked to their leader. They were obviously distracted by what I was saying – which was good. Their minds weren’t in the game. Ugly sneered at me. “Bullshit.” “You know who I am. So you know I’m good for it.” “I got my orders.” Fuck. Another business principle that apparently holds true for prison: don’t bother negotiating with foot soldiers. They don’t have the authority to cut a deal. But I kept talking, just in case. I kept my voice calm – I didn’t betray an ounce of fear or weakness – but I let them know they were idiots if they went through with it.

“Sir. Cell block D had an incident. Two inmates fought over—” “Handled?” I cut in. “Yes, sir. They’re in the infirmary. Minimal injuries. So fuck me for not sleeping at night like normal people. I make my rounds. I focus on inmates transferring out of prison. I make sure their mental state is stable, and try to discern their readiness for life outside of prison. If need be, I can petition a court to have someone'srelease date postponed. I've never had to do that. I deal mostly with minor criminals. Troublemakers, people with no impulse control, people
