Calix asked after a long moment of silence, pulling out a book from the small stack on my desk. “That is a book of tales and myths about our people.” I said, smiling when he placed the book next to me on the loveseat. “It holds the story of the original Shifters and the Four Sacred Dragons that founded the four Kingdoms.” Calix climbed onto the seat and grabbed the book, raising it to me as he settled against the armrest. “Would you like me to read it to you?” I smiled as he nodded again, his brown hair bouncing around as he leaned in a little closer.

Even as Rhazien spoke, Kaerith felt something far worse watching from beyond the dark. She felt a pulse. A hunger. It wasn’t Rhazien. It was the other one—the one they called the Beast. His shadow stretched across the chamber as he stood, his armor creaking. “To the court,” he snapped. The Woundmaidens seized Kaerith’s chain and dragged her toward the door, through the twisting tunnels of Murnokh, past rusted gates and bone lanterns.

It's beautiful. Students move across the grounds in clusters, some already in uniform, others dragging bags behind them. And everywhere— Beasts. Not just one kind. Dozens. I have only read about the beasts and bonds. Old books with outdated photos. Skyless Keep, the prison I once called home, had a small library with about 12 beat up history books. They only allowed books regarding Elarion, Nythera, and Solvaris. I read them until the words were permanently etched into my brain. Suddenly, I'm ripped from my thoughts. I'm surrounded my beasts and magic and students everywhere. While I thought I would be afraid to see the beasts so close, I'm actually in awe.

I did everything to be a good friend, only to be treated as my so-called best friend’s scapegoat. When her husband found cigarette ash in their house, she claimed I was the one smoking.
