It pulsed like breath. From the darkness, Ellie Carson stepped forward. Her clothes were torn, her skin streaked with ash, her braid half undone — but her shoulders squared as though she bore the weight of the world. In her right hand she held the Blade of Bellerophon, its surface alive with runes that pulsed softly, resonating with every beat of her heart. Behind her came Cerebus. Scarred. Bloodied. Noble. Alpha’s eyes glowed with grim steadiness. Beta’s ears flicked, always listening. Gamma bared his teeth to the wind, snapping at the air like it mocked him. They walked as one, their massive form casting a shadow larger than life.

I ran straight at the edge and leapt into the air, tucking into a somersault as the blades whirled mercilessly below. I watched the bear as it tumbles end over end, stuffing flying, until it wedges into a gearbox with a metallic crunch. The blades shriek, causing them to grind to a shuddering halt mere inches from slicing me to ribbons. I landed hard on the other side, bruised and battered but triumphant. I had made it through the Labyrinth of Woe, though at great cost. I collapsed to the platform, breathing heavily. The adrenaline coursed through my veins while the lingering threat of what almost happened still hung thickly in the air.

It felt cool against her sweaty palm, and she gripped it tighter. A quiet buzzing cut through the night. Lily swallowed hard. Raising the blade, she turned, eyes darting between the trees. Silence. Then – A large, bee-like creature swung at her, heavy wings stirring the cool, still air. Swearing under her breath, Lily ducked. The creature – a bowstring, Lily realised belatedly, her tired brain snapping to life as adrenaline flooded her veins – propelled itself back towards her. She sidestepped it neatly, before spinning on her toes and raising the blade as it through the night once more.

Therin stands guard, blade drawn, watching the walls ripple. Maeven gasps and rushes forward. “What happened?” Renna’s lips are pale. “The Maze… it bit me.” She isn’t exaggerating. The teeth marks are unmistakable, jagged, and wrong. The wound pulses in rhythm with the Maze’s heartbeat, bleeding far too fast. Maeven drops to her knees, hands already glowing faintly blue. “Hold her still.” Therin kneels to help, but his voice trembles. “Can you fix it?”

He did not stop as he quickly moved forward. A ferocious beast lunged at Chase. It was covered with black stripes and had horns on its head. Its body was black and looked like it was covered with armor made of metal. "Beast!" Chase growled, swinging the blade in his hand. It shone with brilliant blade intent that shot right through the ferocious beast's brain. "Huh? There's a monster pill inside the ferocious beast?" Chase's eyes brightened. He searched the beast and grabbed a monster core. Just as he was about to crush it, his ears caught a sound.

That he’d grown addicted. Blade moves first, sweeping the room with his scanner. Spade covers the rear. Their movements are crisp, almost soundless. These are men who’ve walked through death before and didn’t mind coming back. Tables line the far wall, littered with rusted tools, syringes, and vials still half-filled with something milky. There’s a cage pushed into the corner. Small. Too small. The metal inside is bent, as if someone, or something, had clawed to get out.

The beast let out a distorted, electronic screech, its legs buckling as the short circuiting brain sent haywire commands to its motors. I didn't wait for it to die. I vaulted off the collapsing machine and drew my second blade, slicing through the throat cables of the second Hound before it could even pivot its turret mounted head. Silence returned to the ravine, punctuated only by the cooling hiss of the Hounds' engines and my own ragged breathing. I knelt beside her. "Elara?"
