' Biting my tongue to stay conscious, I frantically searched the riverbed for the lost ring. Eventually, exhaustion took over. My body went numb. Someone pulled me out and threw a blanket over me. I barely had the strength to hold it up. Shivering, I dragged myself toward William. He was kissing Jennifer on the couch. It was a slow, lingering kiss filled with warmth and tenderness. Even the onlookers seemed moved by it. I sat there quietly. It felt like an eternity passed before they finally parted. With what little strength I had left, I held up the ring and whispered, "William, I did it."

“That woman again? What kind of twisted stunt is she pulling now? Why has karma not caught up with her yet?!” Eric took a deep breath and turned to face him directly. “Mr. Zach, I have uncovered something from the past, something you need to hear.” And so the truth came spilling out. As the tale unfolded, Zach’s face twisted, first with disbelief, then rage, and finally a cold and empty stillness… The fury drained from him, and he seemed to crumble from within. His shoulders sagged. His eyes reddened with grief. “Hannah... Hannah, she...”

Personally, I want to see what's in that book. I'd spent yet another evening thinking about her. She's the first thing in life that had taken my focus off the endgame, which is not exactly a good thing. I didn't make provisos for being sidetracked because until one day ago, I didn't think there was anything that could sway me from my path. But something about her situation keeps pulling at me, and I know I won't rest until I get to the bottom of this shit.

And now, I was done believing him. The silence stretched on, and the man on the phone asked again. I steadied myself and answered calmly. "Yes. I accept." We exchanged a few more words, settled on a start date, and I hung up. Then I hailed a cab and went home. I pushed open the front door and went straight upstairs to pack. I was moving out. If I was going to end things, there was no point dragging it out. Packing did not take long. Looking down at the worn-out clothes and pants so faded they had turned white, it hit me just how lean these years had really been.
