Berserk Omnibus Novels & Stories

The thick, hefty volumes of the Berserk Omnibus are a double-edged sword for me. The paper quality is genuinely good, way better than the older single volumes that yellowed on my shelf. Having three volumes in one is a space-saver, but the sheer weight makes it awkward to read unless you're propped up at a desk. The restoration work on the early art is the real draw—some of the darker, murkier panels from the '97 single volumes are much clearer here. You can actually see the detail in Miura's insane cross-hatching.

That said, the binding on mine feels a bit tight, and I'm paranoid about the spine cracking if I open it too wide. It's a presentation piece more than a casual reading copy. If you're a newcomer who wants the whole story without hunting down out-of-print singles, this is the most accessible route. For re-reads, I still grab my old, battered copies.

I just got my hands on Volume 14, and yeah, the cover is definitely new artwork. It's that iconic panel of Griffith, but rendered in this really stark, almost chiaroscuro style with deep blacks and a silvery sheen to his armor. It's a departure from the earlier omnibus covers that used color spreads from the manga; this feels like a piece made specifically for the release.

I have mixed feelings, honestly. While the new art is technically impressive and looks great on the shelf, part of me misses the cohesive look of the first dozen volumes with their unified design. This one stands out a bit too much. Still, it's Berserk—you buy it for the content inside, not the jacket. I'm just glad they're still putting these out.

The 'Berserk' omnibus volumes are a pretty compelling place to jump in, even if purists have their gripes. These three-in-one editions are thick, but they're surprisingly sturdy for the price, and getting that much story in one go is convenient. The larger pages also make Miura's art pop in a way the older singles just can't match, which is a huge deal for this series.

That said, the sheer weight can be a literal pain to hold up. And while the paper quality is fine, it's not archival-grade, and some of the gutter loss in the center panels is a minor annoyance you have to just accept. Still, for new readers who want an affordable, readily available physical edition, it's honestly the easiest on-ramp right now. You won't find the singles for a reasonable price anymore, and the story's density is overwhelming regardless of format.

I started with the third omnibus on a whim after seeing a friend's copy, and the art alone hooked me enough to track down the rest. The inconvenience of the book's size is a small trade for seeing the full two-page spreads without a break.
