"Come on, my adventurers. Time to rest. Tomorrow is a new day full of adventures!" "Sadie, can you tell a story first?" Ruby asked, already wrapping herself in the blanket. "Of course! How about a story about a little bunny named Pumpkin? He was the most curious bunny in the forest." "Curious like Ryan?" Rory asked, laughing and pointing at her brother. "Hey!" Ryan complained, but he was smiling. "Yeah, like Ryan," I agreed, winking at him. "Pipkin found a shiny golden key one day and decided he needed to find out what it opened. He asked the squirrel, the little bird, and even the big bear in the forest."

Fair. Apparently being a baby wasn't a valid excuse. Reasonable honestly. Several minutes later she disappeared. God. Then returned carrying an alphabet book. Fair. A very large alphabet book. Reasonable. The kind usually intended for children who could sit upright. God. Not babies who occasionally sneezed at random. Fair. Then Lily sat directly in front of Peanut. Reasonable. Opened the book. God. And school began. Fair. "A." Reasonable. Peanut stared. God.

As we stepped in, he gave a small nod to the first store’s attendant we met before hurrying off to a quiet section of the store. While Uncle Al ran his long hands along the books on the shelf, soft hurried footsteps caught my attention. A girl of about five years old with pigtails peered at a man who had a book propped on his face. As soon as my uncle stopped pacing, the quiet air of the room felt different. I felt like I won and lost a trophy at the same time as wailing laughter reached my ears. “Do you feel that?” “That,” Uncle Al tapped on a seemingly ordinary leather book about cooking and grinned, “is our ticket. Place your hand on the book.”

Chapter 118: In Another Life, I Would Be Your Son RILEY I nodded eagerly, scooting over to make room for him to sit on the edge of my mattress instead. The book was about a brave little wolf who went on adventures and learned important lessons about friendship and courage. Mr. Xenois had read it with different voices for each character, making me giggle despite the heaviness in my chest. When he'd finished the story and closed the book, I'd looked at him carefully in the soft light from my lamp.

“ I am fine, Aunt, I only came to say my final goodbye” “ Goodbye, what do you mean pumpkin? ”. “ I lost my great grand Nana, Grandpa will be flying back to New York to take me away”. “ Take you away, why? ”. “ I heard Daddy tell him on the phone that there are bad people who want to hurt me here”. Kate scolds in a soft tone. “Aww, Mom…” He pouts. “Okay. But Lee Lee, can you please read this awesome new book I got? It’s about a dinosaur that invades New York City,” he pleads, grabbing the book and showing Lena. “Sounds… um… promising.” Lena puts her arm around him as Will waves goodnight before they disappear up the stairs. Twenty minutes later, she emerges from Will’s room as we meet in the hallway. She places her fingers to her lips, and low and behold, there’s a sound-asleep child holding onto his precious dinosaur book.

“Grandpapa, can we tell a nice story? Today is my first day at the academy. I am very enthusiastic about reading many books. Today I got 3 books, and I have read them.” “Oh yeah, what book did you read about?” Mum asked no less enthusiastically. “About the evil monsters,” Violet replied. “I also dream of defeating that monster with a sword.” “It is very cool. By the way, have you met many friends?” he asked. “I haven’t met them yet. But they already know me well.” Violet pursed her lips. “You should make friends, pumpkin. Going through your days at the academy would be great if you know someone you can chat with and have fun things to say,” Mum said.

“You probably always knew, didn’t you? That she wasn’t to be trusted. And me? Blind. Foolish. I let her stand beside us all these years, poisoning me under my own nose. If you were awake, you’d tell me how to fight her. You’d tell me how to stop what’s coming.” ‎I pushed myself to my feet and crossed the room, stopping at the old bookshelf. My fingers trailed over the spines until I pulled out a familiar, worn storybook. The cover was faded, the edges torn, but it brought a memory of nights by the fire, sitting cross-legged as he read to me. ‎ ‎I carried it back and sat down again, opening the first page. “Remember this?
