A Bitter Marriage Contract
There was no submission, nor any affectation.
She set the tray down on the desk carefully and smiled slightly.
“I hope you like it,” she said, her voice low and sweet.
The aroma was inviting, the presentation impeccable. John didn’t need to taste it to know it was perfect. But his pride, combined with his still-unresolved hurt, spoke louder.
His gaze turned icy.
“Don’t smile at me,” he said sharply. “I don’t want to see that fake smile again.”
Elizabeth froze. The smile faded from her lips, giving way to a painful silence. Her eyes welled up, but she merely nodded, silently.
