THE HEIRESS THEY BURRIED
Beneath it all, an enormous steel hatch emerged slowly into the last of the daylight, roots grown thick across its surface, metal pitted with rust but still unmistakably solid.
Stamped across its center, in letters worn but legible, four words remained.

Elara knelt beside it, running her fingers along the edge, searching instinctively for whatever mechanism might hold it closed.
There wasn't one.

"It's already open," she said slowly.
"That's not possible," Gabriel said. "Something's been sealing this place for thirty years."
