El stifled a groan and turned to Lucas, who looked utterly mortified. "Right, back to class, folks!" The Principle shuffled his chair back as he stood, vaguely gesturing with one arm. They filed out of the office into the main hallway, where the magnolia paint was peeling off the walls in places, revealing a pale green underneath. "Psychiatric green", El had once told her, thought to be a calming colour. Lucas took off down the hall, slamming a locker door as he went. "Well, that's just great," El grumbled.

I approached Elocin to tell her that. “Elocin,” I called her, “There are like suspicious men outside. They are all wearing black and their eyes aren’t focused on anything. They eyes are roaming around like they’re looking for something.” I said, a bit nervous for her, as I will be leaving her.

When we reached the corner where we always split, he paused. “Do you wanna come over?” he asked. I blinked. “To your place?” He nodded. “My brother works late. You’d be safe.” I hesitated, then nodded. “Okay.” --- Blue’s house was smaller than I expected. A two-bedroom rental tucked behind a bakery, with peeling paint on the front porch and a cracked window that had been patched with duct tape. Inside, it smelled like lemon cleaner and old wood. He kicked off his shoes by the door and motioned toward the couch. “You can sit.”

And he froze. There, in the exact center of his sterile, gray quarters, where no soil had ever been, a flower grew. It was a delicate, impossible thing. Its petals were a deep, velvety black that seemed to drink the light, and at its center, a stamen glowed with a soft, internal blue radiance. It was a species he recognized from galactic archives: a Nyx Bloom, native to a planet whose atmosphere would liquefy a human in seconds. It was a biological impossibility. A miracle.

I didn't need to look up to know he saw me. But I did anyway. Chance Black stood at the front of the room, dressed in black again. Shirt buttoned all the way up this time. Sleeves long. No tattoos in sight. He looked neat. Sharp. Cold. His hair was down. Longer than I remembered. Dark waves that brushed just past his jaw, messy but intentional. His jaw was tight. His lips didn't move unless he needed them to. He looked too good. Too young. Too fucking hot to be standing up there like he wasn't a walking distraction.

Feeling giddy, Mikayla put on the bracelet and did a little spin for the guests. Cory let out a whistle. “Ben, this must have cost you a pretty penny.” Ben grinned. “All that matters is that Mikayla loves it.” Turning around, Ben walked toward me. He held a smaller carton and passed it to me. “This one’s for you, Kaycee.” I set my drink down and took the box. The packaging was very basic, without even a seal sticker. I peeked inside and found a generic blind-box plushie. It was from an old series that had been popular two years back.
