Crackle. Hiss. Then Charlie, all lazy vowels. “Base here. Go ahead, Siren.”
“Charlie, it’s Steve!”
“What’s the prob, Stevo? You still owe me that p**n stash—don’t think I forgot!”
“Shut up and listen! Where the fuck are we?! We’re going down—systems are fucked!”
Sparks spat. Screens went from bad to black.
A new noise threaded under everything—boiling. Stephen stumbled outside. The sea lay dead flat from horizon to horizon like a floor poured yesterday—but around the hull, water fizzed hard, a ring of violent soda. No wind. No current. Wrong.
