"I need to see it." We left Alexei with the column and moved west through the tree line and reached the river bank in four minutes and I looked at what Morvanna had done to it and felt something cold move through me that had nothing to do with temperature. The water was black. Not dark from depth or shadow. Black the way oil is black. Moving with the particular sluggish heaviness of something that had been replaced rather than contaminated. The smell coming off it was the same rot we had smelled on the road but stronger here, concentrated, the source of what was spreading outward through the land in every direction from the water lines.

Chapter 25: The Extraction The rain began to fall in heavy, rhythmic sheets as they left the warehouse, blurring the line between the gray sky and the black Lagos lagoon. Jade sat in the passenger seat, the iridescent blue vial clutched in her hand like a holy relic. She felt hollowed out, as if Silas’s betrayal had scraped away the last of her childhood illusions.

Carol didn't know how she managed to say that in a kind way. She nodded and they began losing the cuffs while she watched. They came off and she sighed in relief, ignoring the pain in the places where they had been. The men left the room and Ora turned to her. “Now, let's get you cleaned up, it's almost past breakfast and you need to eat.” She smiled as she felt her wolf shift within her. See girl, we're going to make it out. As the hot water touched her skin, she closed her eyes in gratitude and prayed for Nate.

Pregnancy. The third wheel. Those words kept swirling in my mind, causing my eyes to fill with tears. I kept gulping down glass after glass of liquor, thinking maybe I could gather the courage to march up to them and throw it in their faces. But my body wouldn't listen. I remained frozen on the spot, trembling with hurt, and my voice was stuck in my throat. The people at the next table, tipsy from their drinks, suddenly started calling out to Adrian.

It won't be sated until a hundred or maybe more have been slaughtered.

But when I washed my hands, the lantern light revealed what the water could not hide. My fingertips. Black. Not bruised. Not dirt. Not even burns. Black—as if ink had seeped into the skin. I scrubbed until the skin went raw, but the stain remained, dark and stubborn. Panic clawed up my throat. I grabbed another rag, another basin of water, scalding this time, and scrubbed harder. Still the black clung, like oil sunk deep into my pores. My breath came sharp, chest heaving. I had seen this before—not on myself, but on others touched by things too foul to name. The memory of the riverbank flashed, bodies scarred not just with bites but with this same mark of corruption.

Rosemary The landscape around us shifted again. The barren wasteland melted away, replaced by a vast, endless expanse of water. The sky above was an inky black, devoid of stars, while the water beneath my feet rippled with an unnatural glow, a luminous silver that seemed alive, pulsing like a heartbeat. I stood at the center of the water, its cool surface solid beneath me, yet it undulated with each step I took. “This is the first trial,” my darker self said, her voice steady, resonating like the quiet thunder of an approaching storm. She stood before me, a perfect mirror but infinitely more composed, more assured. “The Trial of the Mind.”

I watched, transfixed despite the pain, as my magic sought out whatever darkness had taken root inside him. But the second that light entered him, something else started oozing from his wounds. Disgusting, greasy black mist that smelled like old copper and stagnant swamp water rose from his body. It looked heavy, almost like liquid soot, dripping over the side of the white sheets and leaving dark stains wherever it touched. My stomach turned at the sight of it, bile rising in my throat. I'd never seen anything so fundamentally wrong, so opposed to life itself.

but he had to just for now. The mysterious figure of blackness started reemerging its hand away from Naraja's chest as red-crimson metallic blood dripped off of its hand and at the same time of the figure of blackness doing this Naraja started to form a puddle of blood around himself and the thing that had acted on its gut-wrenching traumatic act. And as Naraja collapsed to the ground full of pain, fear, and loneliness. That's all that Naraja could feel at this very moment. Was just that. The mysterious figure of blackness flicked its wrist to splatter and dissipate the blood that had remained on its hand, in a sense of a way to get the blood off.

“The spindle. It’s already in the wetland. I can feel it.” Carolina’s first instinct was to scoff, but then she saw what the twin saw. The black water beyond the luminescent garden was not quite black—it pulsed in the dark, thin white lines threading the current. Not quite a glow, more a subtraction of all else, as if the night itself was fraying, the river’s coherence eaten away thread by thread. “Is it... burning?” Mira murmured. Her face was not afraid, just rapt. “No,” Carolina said, staring. “It’s hungry, but it’s not fire. It’s like—” She stopped, unable to explain. Like everything she’d spent her life running from—oblivion. Or a hunger that remembered being alive.
