I stabbed over my head, dragging the blade with me towards its rear with a spill of silk. Its belly exploded in scurrying baby spiders, each the size of a housecat. The newly birthed young devoured their mother from the inside out, her screams shrill and lengthy. I ran up onto her fallen corpse, the hard shell of her carapace shattering under my heels, and leapt free, seizing upon a strand of thread that was suspended from a tree. The baby spiders surged up the trunk and I tied the thread around my waist so that I dangled over the massacre, as they pursued me.

On the tips of each leg, they appear to be more like claws as she pulls her way to the tip of the tub, but I know by three perfect red shiny circles lined down her back, she is no other than the deadly black widow. The way they moved their antennas back and forth at me and glared with their beady eyes. I know that I am lunch. I look for a door, but there isn’t one, only four squares. More spiders emerge from the pipe. Nausea churns within my stomach and creeps up to my throat. To my side, I ball up my fist and close my eyes. "Enough!" I scream out at the top of my lungs. We’re still standing exactly where she left us when she strolls back in. “All done. You’re all safe now.” She’s grinning, shaking her bold head like we’re the village idiots. “Oh, and by the way,” she adds sweetly, “that’s a Mexican Red-Knee Tarantula. They don’t make webs, only silk out their burrows, Logan.” She beams at him like she’s just taught a toddler the alphabet. Logan doesn’t seem to believe her. And the brothers are suddenly fascinated by every space in the room that isn’t occupied by a human.
