The blade sank deep into my side instead, just below the ribs, and white-hot agony detonated through me like liquid lightning forged in the pits of the abyss. I collapsed to one knee, blood pouring hot and fast from the wound, soaking the shattered marble floor of the feast hall. The poison spread instantly, black veins crawling up my torso like living shadows, burning through muscle and sinew with merciless hunger.
