Against All Odds
My mark was exposed, angry and red, glowing faintly now with its last flickers of life.
One witch placed both hands over the mark. Another poured oil black as void across my shoulders. It dripped in slow streams down my spine, seeping into me like cold fire. I trembled.
Then came the chant. It rose in layers, guttural, high, dissonant, echoing from earth and air and the burning pool. The Hollow's power wasn't gentle. It wasn't light. It did not heal. It unmade. It devoured. It ripped through me like claws, scraping marrow from bone, peeling back everything I was until only the hollow shape of my purpose remained.
