Frowning I turned my hands around to see what was causing the pain and saw red semicircular marks on my palms seemingly caused by my nails. "I was too exhausted today, and I also burned my hands, so I didn't buy it." Then, I showed them my hands. Old calluses were everywhere, and the skin was currently swollen, red, and had newly-formed boils. "Kia, I burned my hands. Could you… Give me some money to buy some burn cream?"

I connected my phone and let the screen glow to life. For a while, I just scrolled—Instagram, texts, mindless nothing—filling Jade in on my apparent life sentence one message at a time. Her rapid-fire responses came through in all caps and rage emojis, which only made me snort softly into the quiet room. Eventually, though, the weight of the day caught up to me. My eyes burned. Quickly, I turn off the gas, and in my absence of mind I pick up the cooking pan with my bare hands. "Fuck!" It burns me immediately and I drop it, Aleen is beside me in an instant, she grabs my hand and directs me to the sink, she holds my hand palm open under the running water. "Sorry. Does it hurt badly?" She asks me, bright eyes holding mine apologetically as the cold water soothes the sharpness of the burn. Turns out I am not as badly burnt as it felt, it was just too sudden and took me by surprise. "No. No, I think I am fine." I tell her. Relief washes over her beautiful features.

After we were done, I took the dishes back to the kitchen to wash them up. “Ah!” I screamed when the water from the kitchen tap touched my hands. Pain shot through me and I yanked my hand back, cradling it to my chest. When I looked down, I saw that my skin was starting to blister. “Aiden!” I called out, panic rising in my chest. “The water…. It’s… it’s burning me!”

It was called ever burning because no one had ever seen it go off. Someone I didn't know brought the razor, on a tray, covered and cleansed, to make sure no bacteria was spread or anything. The elder took it and handed it to me first. He took my hand, stretching it and then urged me to cut my palms. I shut my eyes tightly and did it. He placed it over the fire and burning began to pain me immensely, still I couldn't take my hands off. I had to say my promise. It had been burned in my subconscious and so I said it easily. I wanted my hands to be taken off the fire immediately, the pain had been too much.

Straight across the table, straight over the back of my hand. It hits like liquid fire, instant and vicious. Skin screams, heat sinking deep, turning everything red and blistering in a heartbeat. Pain explodes up my arm, sharp enough that my vision blurs for a second. My breath jams in my throat, comes out as a tight, involuntary hiss between clenched teeth.

Some parts were already burnt so badly that they had turned black. "Oh No. That is not supposed to happen. What am I to do now?" I panicked staring at the pan with wide eyes not knowing what to do to stop the veggies from burning. I quickly grabbed the pan with my bare hands in a bid to take it out of the fire and the heat that emitted from the palm scalded my hands in seconds making me to howl out in pain. "That's very stupid of you Claire, how do you think it would be possible to take down a hot pan with your bare hands?" I mocked myself, swinging my hands violently to stop the sizzling pain.

But he only ever wanted our relationship to be inappropriate. I laid out some clothes on my bed and went into the bathroom that was attached to my bedroom. My hand was throbbing in pain, I could see bits of skin that were already peeling from the burn. I ran some cold water over the raw flesh, but it hurt too bad. White spots danced in my vision and I had to stop. I needed to shower, then I’d deal with my hand. I got into the tub, careful not to let the warm water touch my hand, and reflected on what happened.

The festival would be beginning in just a few hours and I still had to get ready. Once Elijah returned to his work outside, I headed upstairs to take a bath.
