I could see to a certain extent at least, make out the faint outlines of things even, and my grandfather’s running form, which was about to disappear down the first bend in the long hallway.
If the lights came on suddenly, two things would happen.
The first was that my irises would be almost entirely swallowed up by my pupils, which had grown to accommodate an ungodly amount of light even in a space where there was none, while the second was that I would without a doubt go blind.
Temporarily, at least, until I figured out how to heal my fried eyes. It was amazing how so much of Body Work happened to be instinctual.
