Everything a sanguis had is bloody red eyes, fur, and two long tails slowly swaying, following the air. I thought that I may have seen a sanguis before, in the middle of the forest when I was a kid when my father knocked on an unfamiliar door and - “She’s shifting back!” Alarick hurriedly approached the prisoner and covered her with the suit he was wearing. I looked at Alarick, who was now lifting the unconscious prisoner. I nodded when I got what he was thinking. “We cannot let her stay here.”

My hands were cold, and I stared at the screen again. “It is not his empire,” I said. "This is his bloodline." Footsteps resounded outside the room. The door opened. Dino stood with an unreadable expression. "You found something," he said. I swung around and looked at him a-throbbing. "Yes," I replied. His eyes sharpened. "What did you find, Drina?" I turned back and looked at the screen, and then at the man whose name had plagued all corners of my life. "A ghost," I said. "And it belongs to your family."

I lunged forward, the silver rope slipping down the shattered fragments of the chair as my hands, now heavily clawed and bleeding, came free in front of my chest. I dropped to the floor, my breath coming in ragged pants as I dragged myself toward the wall. Through the thick stone of the door, the muffled sound of a violent argument cut through the silence of the corridor. “The entire Blackthorn vanguard is hunting us, you idiot!” Detective Rowan Black’s voice was high, stripped of its usual smooth authority. “The Okoye Alpha has triggered the Blood Hunt! My badges won’t save us if his wolves cross into the heights!”

The day I left the hospital, the sunlight felt blinding. I thought that was the end. Twenty thousand for peace. From then on, we would go our separate ways. I was wrong. There was no bottom line to human greed. Brian must have been pushed by my coldness. He sold the apartment, took the money, and ran off with his new girlfriend. He even changed his phone number. When the hospital called me, I was in a meeting. "Mr. Jones, your brother can't be reached. The patient's follow-up treatment hasn't been paid for. He's also ready for discharge, but there's no one to pick him up…"

Three days after identifying Silas Greythorne's handwriting, Sera woke to urgent knocking. Lucien burst in before she could answer, his eyes wild with fear. His voice was tight, almost cracking. "There's been a murder." She was out of bed immediately. "What? Where?" "The Nocturne District. A vampire elder, found dead in his home last night." He handed her his phone. "Look at the positioning." Sera's blood ran cold, and a wave of nausea rose in her throat. The body was arranged on the floor, arms spread, throat slashed. Around him, ritual markings drawn in blood.

“But there are levels to this game, Henrique.” I took a step forward. “Return the shipment you hijacked. Or be ready to be torn alive.” Henrique spat on the ground near my boot. He laughed, taunting me. “Go on. I dare you. Do your worst.” I tilted my head. “As you wish.” I didn’t even have to signal. The clearing erupted into a total disorder. Bodies collided; the sound of fists hitting the enemy’s flesh; the snarls of wolves filling the air.

“Don’t try and sell it to me. If you hunt us, then you wouldn’t want to be like us.” “You aren’t one of them,” I muttered. “You don’t hurt people.” She shrugged, despondent. “I’m still dead. I still have to drink blood to survive.” She wrinkled her nose, and then dropped her head into her hands. “Why is the thought of blood making me hungry?” She hissed. “I don’t want this, Callie.”

HUNTER’s POV I shake my head as I looked down at the dying man. “Puh…please…save me,” the man begs as he drowns in a pool of his own blood. “Should have thought about that before you tried to kill me,” I sneer and slap off the man’s bloodied hands from my knee. The man wraps his hands around his own neck, where blood is spurting out like a fountain in an attempt to stop the bleeding. But it is too late for him. I have clawed him across the throat. He will be dead in seconds.

Hunter headed to the corner shop to grab coffee and breakfast, knowing she’d still want a bite. Chloe pulled on her clothes, stepped out of the bathroom, and froze. The masked man was there. A sharp blow to her head, and everything went black. Hunter stepped back into the house and instantly knew something was wrong. The air felt heavy, and then he smelled it, blood. Her blood. His chest tightened. Why hadn’t she fought back? The bracelet. Callum. He tried to follow the scent, but it vanished abruptly, probably where they’d forced her into a vehicle.

He held the dagger up to Ruben and Ruben stepped forward taking Batton’s other wrist and slashing it open as well. Kat gasped in a breath as Ruben stood side on to Batton and raised his hand, igniting Blood Reign and Batton’s blood started to glow, lifting up from the ground and, like dust particles in the sunlight, drifted up in small filaments and disappearing. Batton grimaced and a pained strangled noise escaped him as the Blood Reign started to pull the blood from his open veins, draining him completely. “You’ll kill him…” Kat breathed, watching with a morbid fascination.
