“You could end it, you know. Pick a winner. Let them live.” I snort. If only it were that easy. “Find me one who can last past the third sunrise, and maybe I’ll consider it.” Her presence flickers in front of me, like a whisp of smoke. “You’ve gone soft. I can smell it on you.” “Must be your imagination. The only thing soft here is the ground after the corpses hit it.” She chuckles and fades, leaving the back of my skull blessedly empty. I straighten, scanning the new arrivals. A witch crying into her hands. Two wolves are already posturing for dominance. A human, brave or stupid, probably both, trying to look like she belongs. The Blackwood wolves surged behind her. A dark shape burst from the treeline. Amber eyes flashed beneath the moonlight. Lyla’s breath sharpened. The rival’s wolf. Lyla’s body coiled with tension. I open my mouth to speak to the black wolf, to tell him to wait, but the air suddenly shatters. A vicious, ear-splitting howl rips through the trees behind us. Three savage, feral lycans - real monsters, eyes blood-red with rabies and bloodlust - burst through the thicket. The rogue beside me snaps into action. He grabs my waist and throws me upward into the low fork of an old oak tree. "Stay!" he grunts in a half-human bark. The meadow explodes into a war zone. Flesh tears. Bone snaps. Eight wolves lock into a brutal, blood-soaked pile, snapping at throats and tearing flanks.

In the blown window, a brown she-wolf crouched half inside, breath hot and rotten, eyes intelligent and hateful. “Out of my house!” Jake bellowed. The wolf weighed him, then lifted a muscled forearm as he fired. Rounds sparked off hide and bone. Zak and Tara piled in. “Smart bitch,” Jake snapped, still working the trigger. “She’s not going down!” Zak barked, stitching a burst. “Body!” Jake yelled. They dragged fire off the skull. The she-wolf shrieked, rocked, then vaulted backward into the yard and vanished into the dark.

That was some DRAMA that year! It happens. It was torture to wait that long and I could not bear it any longer so I went outside, running towards the direction where the snarls were coming from. There I met a black wolf right as it tore the head off a mangled brown wolf. The smell after that was horrible to the point it had me retching. In front of me was a massacre, a gruesome scene with mangled and stinky wolves with their limbs torn out. Some were headless, some had their throats torn out and others had their bodies ripped in half. In the middle of this massacre, the black wolf responsible for all this turned. Golden yellow eyes glowed as they fell on me. Blood coated its black fur and without thinking, I rushed towards the wolf.

I glanced around and tried to know exactly where I was this time around, it was a plain field, a battle seemed to have ensued, I didn't know between who but they seemed to be very aggressive, going for kills and not sparing anyone in their path Blood splattered everywhere, the scene was very gory, even for me, heads detached from their bodies, wolves seemed to lie very still like they were dead, everything seemed to move slowly and blurred, screams pierced the midnight air, the moon seemed to glow like a ball of fire. A head rolled towards my feet when I glanced down, it belonged to a child, her eyes were blank and her hair matted with red blood that spilled out of her severed neck. A scream
