Behind me, the bridesmaids jostled and elbowed for position, everyone except Sophia and Lisa, who casually stepped back with identical smug grins.
“Sophia, at least pretend to try!” Mason shouted from the sidelines, sending the whole crowd into laughter.
I tossed. The bouquet soared high then landed in one of my college friend’s arms, and she squealed with delight. Sophia and Lisa clapped each other like conspirators who’d dodged a bullet.
After the bouquet found its new owner amid laughter and cheers, the music softened. Before I knew it, my mother’s hands were in mine, guiding me to the center of the floor.
