One of the wild dogs lunged at her but Chloe was fast, kicking the beast out in the air and sent it rolling to the ground before she spun and got knocked onto his back by another dog. Before it could bite, a black blade was driven through its skull from the right side. Chloe jumped to her feet as a rocks and boulders knocked another of the wild dogs to the ground. The dog growled with its ragged breathing and I braced up. That's when I spotted the jagged rock buried half way into the dirt. I reached for it quickly just as the dog got back on its feet. “Get away from her!” I roared, swinging the rock. It connected with a sickening crack against the dog’s skull. The beast whimpered, tottering in disorientation. I got upright, my chest heaving. The dog hesitated, hanging its head low, before darting into the underbrush. Silence pressed in.

Sebastian meets it with the crook, catching it across the shoulder hard enough that the animal yelps and staggers sideways. I throw the rock. It hits the dog in the ribs. Not hard enough to do real damage but enough to startle it, make it reassess. River and Rain are running toward us now, both carrying larger stones, shouting to make themselves seem bigger and more threatening. The dog looks between all of us, foam still dripping, body still coiled with aggression. Then something shifts. Maybe it’s the numbers. Maybe it’s the pain from where Sebastian hit it. Maybe whatever part of its brain is still functioning realizes this fight isn’t worth it.

That's when I noticed Ellara and Gina standing together, whispering. “You’re not going to share it with Mommy?” I asked, smiling. Ellara stepped forward. “Actually, Bodhi was in a lot of pain today.” Her meek voice froze me. “Why, what happened?” I set the comb down and cupped his face. He looked pale, his usual energy gone. Normally, Bodhi was loud, playful, always carrying his sisters’ school bags inside. “He said he kept hearing wolves howling. But Mommy! there weren’t any wolves,” Gina spoke softly.

"Now you're part of the pack," Mikhail's voice snapped me out of my trance. “A black alloy of metals, as a symbol of black wolves, and a red stone is a symbol of the fire inside you,” he explained, pointing to his own, exactly the same pendant around his neck.
