Break: The minute the Alpha bond was broken, the whole pack felt it. Like a ripple effect pulling out into the pack and then ripping apart each one of them. Eliza felt both the Alpha bond break and her mate bond shattered. She sat crying next to James unsure of what to do next. She was not sure how the pack would react. A creaking noise from the doorway broke her thoughts. She looked up seeing a young man standing in the doorway, his mouth hanging open in shock as he looked into the room.

At the warmth that had been pulsing through the cloth all morning in the steady rhythm I had stopped trying to ignore. “The anchor bond,” she said. “If it is completed correctly before the seal breaks, the fracture transfers its endpoint.” She looked back at my face. “Currently when the seal breaks the fracture impact goes through the sacrifice bond. Through me. It kills me because it is designed to find the living anchor of the maintenance and move through it.” She paused. “If there is a completed anchor bond in place when the seal breaks, the fracture finds that instead. It transfers its endpoint from me to the anchor.”

For the first time in what felt like forever, I could finally exhale. Cora and I settled into a quiet corner at the bar, our glasses filled with freshly made cocktails. I told her about the Primal Bond. She listened, then said quietly, "If you want to break it, you can't walk away from what's happening with Adrian." I frowned. "Why not?" "I went through the entire archive last night," Cora said, taking a sip of her drink. "Breaking a Primal Bond isn't simple. If Adrian dies before it's completed, the pain will hit your brain like something being severed all at once."

Heath agreed, exhausted emotionally beyond coherent conversation. “You said either him or you. That doesn’t make sense anymore seeing as your both my fated mates.” Maximus shook his head. “I can’t be bonded to you if you don’t bond him and Kairos,” Maximus said softly. “It’ll kill us both. As much as I care about you, I won’t let them suck us dry. The safest way to go about it if you can’t complete all of the bonds, is to break them.” My heart fell out of my ass. Maximus would break our bond? My entire body was screaming in protest at that thought. So much so, that I left Maximus’s bed to press my hands to his chest. I shook my head violently.

“Siphon the bond.” The air in the room shifted. “We can do it with some ancient rites,” Kai said carefully. “Dangerous ones. But theoretically—” “No,” I snapped. Kai straightened. “Adrian—” “No,” I repeated, his voice low. “You know what happens when a bond like this is severed forcibly.” “Chaos,” he said. “Power backlash. Emotional fracture.” “Exactly.” Kai’s lips pressed into a thin line. “You think breaking it would feed the thing.”

In the end, I told myself it was wrong to be petty toward a grieving widow, so I was the one who gave in and apologized. Later, when Ryan wanted to put his ring back on, he couldn't find it anywhere. Luckily, I still had the original design sketches. Since my own ring was getting worn out, I decided to order a brand-new set, identical to the first. But before the rings even arrived, our bond had already shattered. I instinctively rubbed the faint pale mark where my ring used to sit.
