I could feel my bones rebuilding, and then I was on all four feets, my vision so clear that I saw even the tiniest of things. I could hear the flies buzzling from meters away. There was an echo in the background, and then I heard her whisper.

Then the floor beneath the second circle cracked wider, and I saw what lay under the creature’s chest. Bones. Human bones. Layered into the foundation in old white tangles beneath the rising hound, fused with root and stone and ritual metal. Not one body. Many. The dead girls had never just been sacrificed to keep the breach sleeping. They had been built into the architecture of containment itself.

He dropped his hand, and they began to shift. The sound of bones cracking and reforming filled the air, a chorus of agony that I had heard too many times to count. Bodies twisted and contorted, fur sprouting from skin, muzzles lengthening, claws extending. The torches on the walls flickered, casting dancing shadows over the scene, making the transformation look even more grotesque than it already was.

Her body only shifted so slightly but she didn’t make any noise. The bone was sticking out through the skin, and her leg mid-calf was twisted the wrong way. Setting the leg back down I could feel the bone rub together, chills made little goose pimples run down my back. I had to set it and get it closed if I had any hope for her to live.

Stefan grumbled, knocking the object with his knuckles, “It's a parietal bone, it's one of two located in the skull, it helps to form the roof of the cranium,” Lilith inspected it closely, “The real question is... The cold stone pressed against my skin, but it was nothing compared to the fire coursing through my bones. At first, it felt like pins and needles—annoying but manageable. Then, the pins turned into jagged knives, stabbing deeper and deeper. My entire skeleton seemed to be alive, cracking and shifting in ways that no human body should ever endure. I clenched my teeth, refusing to scream, but a low growl escaped my throat as every bone screamed in agony.

He pulled his arm back and struck the wall again, and again, and again. Boom! Boom! Boom! The sound of solid stone fracturing echoed alongside the sickening, distinct pop of his own bones breaking. His knuckles split open completely. Thick, dark blood seeped out of his skin, gushing down his hand and splashing heavily onto the floor. Two of his finger bones fractured under the brutal impact, the sharp pain radiating up his arm, but he didn't care. He didn't even flinch. He just kept punching until the entire section of the reinforced stone wall collapsed inward, crumbling into a pile of gray dust and rubble.

I reach out and try to touch Caine who knelt beside me all this while but my hand makes a cracking sound. I dropped my hand to the ground immediately.
