My brain was drunk, fried, misfiring because monsters weren’t real.
Still, when I crawled back into bed, I yanked the sheets up tight around me and left my glasses on.

Sleep never came. My head was splitting, like someone had crammed glass behind my eyes, and every time I blinked I saw claws raking stone, gold flashing where it shouldn’t. I kept telling myself it was the booze, the pounding bass. I told myself a lot of shit, but none of it stuck, and by the time light finally bled through the curtains I was half-crazed from exhaustion and ready to claw my own skin off.
