Alexander had been in surgery for three hours. I sat in one of the uncomfortable chairs, watching Mia, who had spread her coloring supplies across the small table between us. Three different shades of blue, two greens, and a purple crayon that was worn down to a stub. She’d been working on the same picture for twenty minutes, adding tiny details that probably no one else would notice. “What’s that one doing?” I asked, pointing to a small dragon in the corner of her paper. “He’s the baby. He’s learning how to be brave from his mama dragon.” Mia carefully colored the baby dragon’s wings pale yellow. “See? His wings aren’t as big yet because he’s still growing.”

"The dragon!" he announced, spreading everything on the coffee table. We gathered around as he drew with surprising skill for a three-year-old. “Thank you.” Nodding, she disappeared back into the house and I watched her leave with a bag of cleaning supplies. I entered the house again and poured another cup of tea before sitting back at the painting. Finishing this one before Marek came back was my goal but I really wanted to finish it today. I didn’t have much left but this was my biggest alteration. I wanted to have the dragon laying partially in the trees and partially on the ground. I loved the picture that I found and I wanted to make that version of a dragon. I’d only ever done the dragons that I’d seen in my own storybooks.

"Oh uh, that's my mom and my brother's dragons. My mom's is the smaller one," he says. "I've only ever heard stories of her dragon and rumors about your brother's. Did you really draw this?" I ask, looking back up at him.

She knew one fall from there would put her back in the bed she so desperately got away from. Her eyes scanned the field again as a smile was plastered to her face. She was so intrigued and mesmerized by the area she couldn’t believe something so beautiful was here. The space was large enough to accommodate two dragons to open there wings and fly. They wouldn’t be able to go far but at least they could open there wings. She was happy, the beauty of dragons should not be kept hidden if it can be helped. She will purpose to Asrar that one of these be built in every city and run by a trusted person.
