It was the type of day that inspired optimism and gave you hope for fresh beginnings. During my study, I came upon an odd book that was sandwiched between two intimidating eras. Its black leather cover was embellished with beautiful silver designs that appeared to sparkle in the dappled light, making it unlike any other book in the library. Apart from the size being thrice smaller compared to our previous apartment, the room only had one small window and doesn't have AC. So before Penelope's forehead could produce sweat, we started studying the book. The book had almost a thousand pages. I close my curls and trace my way in front of the wall-size portrait again. Just when I am about to open my eyes a chunk of pages ruffle over from the corner at my face before it is all but scattered over the floor. Even the pages bring her perfume. I try to hold back to take my eyes on the photo, but my stubborn eyes stay glued to the pages. The title page and table of contents looks normal, but I keep flipping pages to get to chapter one. Two more pages and I’m staring at the first chapter, titled “Finding a Companion.” I almost missed the title completely because my eyes were drawn to the center of the page where there was a rectangular shaped wooden box. All the pages had been cut through the center to fit this box inside, and there was something carved into the box. Back to the front cover. Kenneth gave me this book as a present. For drawing purposes, I know it's a sketchpad with white blank papers. Just ordinary... Yet now, I'm witnessing with my own two eyes how the plain abstract cover erased its colors, transforming into something red with cursive design at the center. Written in thick italic letters, THE BOOK OF STRINGS wrote itself as if there's an invisible hand with golden ink writing them. If I'm in my right state of mind, I would have screamed, tuck my tails, and bolt to ask for help. But I did nothing of those...

The book was still pulsing in her hands and Claude knew that something was definitely up with it. Escaping to the girls’ bathroom, she found a stall and flipped open the book. Although Claude was the one opening the book, it was almost like the book was opening itself as the pages fluttered until a page was left in front of her and Claude gasped at the sight of actual words on the book for the first time. Placing her finger on the page to save it, she flipped through the book again, but the rest of the pages were empty. She opened back to the page that held words written in the most stylish cursive writing she had ever seen.

Yam sliced it open slowly, hands trembling. Inside was their book. “The Art of Staying.” Cover: a sunflower. A crooked shelf. Two mugs—one chipped. And behind it all, the suggestion of a fan, mid-spin. Franc stared at it like it might whisper back. “Feels unreal,” Yam said. Franc flipped through pages. Some with artwork. Others with Yam’s poetry. Their story—wired beginnings and all—now bound in matte finish. “I think this book breathes,” Franc said.

Smaller ones, thin like an old bible, yellowed with page break apart. Once there pages were successfully separated, I carefully put the knife down, not wanting to slice any pages or myself. The pages smelt like mould and looked ancient, they looked like they would be grimy to the touch but they felt like silk. The amount of small little pages were like a book of their own, how could this be hidden away for so long and no one notice it?

my wolf grimaces uncomfortably. “You’re not wrong on that one,” I shudder, quickly flipping the page over. The further I delve into the book, the further deteriorations I can see to its neglected condition. I can’t help but notice the thread holding the book together has begun to fray, struggling to contain the historical accounts listed inside. Its layout subtly begins to shift the more I push on, gradually altering with each entry included allowing me to differentiate between the multiple rulers listed inside.
