Book Review Club Novels & Stories

It was more for Kendra's sake, but Demitri would be lying if he said he didn't enjoy an excuse to spend more time with his friends. Every Friday after school, Kendra, Steve, and Kyle would join them for book club. They each took turns picking the book, but as usual Becca and Demitri were the only two that actually cared. While they had written summaries and detailed notes about the book, the others brought blank paper most the time so they could catch just enough facts to make it seem like they read it.

I sat on Xavier's lap, Dane and Theo on either side of me as we chatted with their parents, Marilyn already popping one of the faerie bottles and pouring four glasses. She handed one to me and I blinked in surprise. "If you're joining Book Club, you'll need to get use to the buzz." She winked. My ears twitched and they all chuckled. "You'd allow me to join your Book Club?" I asked, Xavier squeezing me sweetly. The mother's smiled at me, sitting shoulder to shoulder beside Dane. "Theo says you're reader of classics." I smiled and nodded. "I love them." Thena pulled out a bag from under the table.

Paris in winter was cold and beautiful and exactly the escape I needed. Mom's book club was a group of women in their fifties, all recently divorced or widowed, reclaiming their lives through travel and literature. They adopted me immediately, plying me with wine and advice. "You're too young to be so serious," one woman—Linda—said our first night in a bistro. "You should be having fun, making mistakes, living." "I'm living," I protested.

I know all of Dr Ambrose's little grunts and noises. Well. Not all of them. I wish. "I went to my book club." Dr Ambrose nods. "Your naughty book club." Ha. "Yep. Shall I tell you about what we're reading?" See, he's not the only one who can toss out a challenge, but sadly he sidesteps mine. "No, I'd rather hear more about the club. Who else attends? Other students?" "Yep. It's mostly girls but there are a few guys too." "And you meet in...?"

Lumen asked. "Apart from working here, the book club is good." "Yeah? What are you currently reading?" "The book club usually has three books at a time we're reading through. One of Sonny's books, one personal development and one for entertainment. I've finished the first two. I'm on to The Hobbit now." "Oh yeah?" Max perked up. "I really liked that one as a kid. It took me longer to get into Lord of the Rings." For the first time, Aspen actually had a little life in her eyes. "Yeah? I've heard it gets really bogged down in description."

Kennedy POV. The weather was bad, but I needed to get that new book, it's Robert birthday gift, who'd knew a grown up man would kill for the newest werewolf love book. I got into my car, drove carefully toward the local book store, they had the new book reserved for me. It was supposed to one quick drive, until I walked into the library. A girl was sitting on a bean bag, her blond hair was covering her eyes with overgrown bangs, she tried to huff them away from her face but to no use. She looked young, maybe she's just here with her parents, looking down at the book she had in her hands it was a kids story. Does she read for the local kids? Or is it just for her?

Her hair was bright pink, her nails painted black, and she wore a T‑shirt that said “Books Before Boys.” “You’re new,” she said, handing me my drink. “Is it that obvious?” “You have that look. The ‘I just moved here and I don’t know anyone’ look.” She leaned on the counter. “I had it too, two years ago. It fades.” I laughed. “How long did it take?” “About a week. Then I found the book club.” “Book club?” She grabbed a flyer from under the counter and handed it to me. “Tuesday nights. The Spined Fox bookstore. We read everything from literary fiction to trashy romance. No judgment.”

eww. I figured tonight was my one chance to visit The Club before anyone knew I had come to town, so here I am. Last time I was here, I wasn't old enough to enter. I've been curious about this place for years. So now is my chance to check out the infamous B D S M sex club. I've been coming to this sunny part of Florida for years now and people talk in town talk about this place like it's some kind of taboo. Maybe it is for some but I grew up knowing the people involved. Good people. So what if they like their sex a little kinky? It's not anyone's business what happens in the bedroom or sex rooms, as the case may be.

I can't imagine spending time with him outside the hospital; I'd be too awed to speak. "All right, ladies!" Cindy taps a spoon against her glass to get our attention. "We're a book club, so we need to at least look like we're talking about this week's read." She reaches down to take a hardback book out of her bright pink beach bag. "Elin Hilderbrand's The Rumor-so much to unpack here. Who wants to start?" When none of us say a word, Cindy heaves a loud sigh. "Okay, children. I see you're going to make me work for this one. The book is told from four different points of view. Which did you relate to the most?"
