Ruby sighed to keep her laughter at bay. Pride and Prejudice is certainly a good book. Ruby also enjoyed it, but it’s a romance novel. This was the first time Ruby had met a man—especially one like Ed—who willingly admitted to liking that book. “Precisely because it’s so different. I enjoy it. It’s simple. There is no need to burden my mind. Light and warm. It reminds me that sometimes people only need simple things to be happy. It's akin to a fragment of a captivating vision that you can perpetually cherish.

She clasped her hands behind her back, fixed her eyes somewhere on the ceiling, and let loose her usual torrent of words. "I read a wonderful book called, Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Brontë. It was written in 1847, but the characters in the book are so real that you feel as if they're living today. When I read this book, I felt as if I were Jane Eyre, a lonely, friendless orphan girl sent away to a cold, cruel boarding school where all the other girls despise her."

It felt like she was still here with me, in this room, and for a moment, I forgot about everything else. I heaved a heavy sigh and turned around, but something caught my attention on her bookshelf. There, nestled between the works of Jane Austen, was a small leather-bound journal that I had never seen before. I picked it up, feeling its soft cover under my fingertips and carefully flipping through the pages. As I read her delicate handwriting, my heart ached with both joy and sadness. This journal was a window into her thoughts, her feelings, her dreams. It was like a piece of her that I had never known before.

“Really?” “You sound surprised.” “I expected you to say something about business strategy or war.” “It contains both.” She smiled. “That is true.” “What about yours?” “Jane Eyre.” I raised an eyebrow. “A complicated choice.” “So is yours.” We spent the next half hour talking about books. Not business. Not the gala. Not Victoria or the strange tension that had followed us since the balcony. Just stories we had read and characters we loved or disliked. Ofelia argued passionately that people misunderstood Jane Eyre’s strength, while I insisted Edmond Dantès had allowed revenge to consume too much of his life.

I practically spit in his face before walking over to the couch and picking up the book I threw. Then I sit down and ignore him. He leaves the room for a while, so I read and wait to meet Ms. Evangeline the queen of Dominic’s heart. Please leave a comment or review. I threw myself back in the teal armchair, annoyed that I didn't discover anything. Then I see it. An old copy of Pride and Prejudice. I said aloud reading out the title from a chapter I had been skimming through over the last couple of days. I had picked the book up while going for groceries and at first I had been drawn to the colors of the book and the Afro-American author at the back when I picked it up but reading it now had open my eyes to a whole lot of things, Jane had called it brainwashing but i I didn't care if my brains were shining sparkling white after I was done with it. Just then the front door opened and I heard people chattering. I had been so lost in thought that I had forgotten about Jane's instructions earlier this morning.

I swear that this guy moves like a ghost. I sat down on the couch, I realised that there was a book on the table. I took it and it was one of my favourite author, it was Jane Austen and it was a first edition. I can only wonder how much it must have caused. Pride and Prejudice will always be my all time favourite literature. All in all I can say that being married doesn't seem to bad from where I was standing.

It was Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. She placed it in my hands without a word, but I couldn’t help the bitter laugh that bubbled up inside me.
