The bureau chief immediately straightened his clothes, leading everyone forward to welcome them, stopping with utmost deference before a Rolls-Royce. The driver respectfully pulled open the car door, and a white-haired elderly man stepped out of the vehicle. Everyone instantly lowered their heads. "Don." Harrison froze. His palms were thoroughly drenched with sweat from nerves over meeting such a powerful figure for the very first time. However, soon the door on the other side opened, and I leisurely stepped out of the car. Harrison snapped his head up, his eyes widening in disbelief.

Clara’s POV The weight of the brown envelope in my bag felt like a lead brick. Inside were the investment documents Kiran had handed me—the "bait" for the trap he was setting. My heart hammered against my ribs as I walked toward the bus stop, every shadow on the street looking like one of Mrs. Victoria’s spies. I looked at my hand. The red mark from the tea had faded into a dull ache, but the memory of Kiran’s cold, dark smile stayed fresh in my mind.

I shoveled it in, not really tasting it, just going through the motions. But eating didn't fill the hole inside. I needed real answers, not that priest's half-baked legends. I set the bowl aside and made my way to the ancient library located in the east wing. The door groaned as I pushed it open. I wandered the shelves, skipping past sections on science, economy, and art, straight to history. My fingers ran over the old book spines until one jumped out: ‘History of Hazel Lands.’ Hazel Lands? I snatched it off the shelf and plopped down at a dusty desk, cracking it open.

“Well, if it isn’t young Ari Hale. Looking for another sci-fi romance?” “Not today.” Ari forced a smile. “I was hoping you had local history books. Old ones. Maybe about legends?” Mrs. Wetherby frowned. “The Folklore Shelf. Back left corner. But don’t go believing any of that nonsense.” Ari found the shelf covered in dust. Most of the books hadn’t been opened. She pulled out a heavy tome titled The Hidden Histories of Varro’s Hollow. An hour later, her fingers stopped on a passage:

"It is the North's ancient history itself. It contains all of what one Lord should know to rule efficiently. Every secret, curse, prophecy, and power itself." He paused for awhile and collected his thoughts: "I was obsessed with this book once I reached my teenage years. To the point that my parents had to hide it from me." "They kept on telling me that I should wait because it will surely be mine someday." He smiled and stared at me. "It was just waiting for you, Katie." I blinked my eyes, trying to suppress my giddiness. Trying to process his words. It doesn't answer any of my questions, but still.. I'm happy that he's sharing without me needing to ask him. It means a lot to me.

Just one more night. He picked a bookstore café this time. Said he wanted to show me his favorite reading book. It was intimate. Thoughtful. He even pulled a worn paperback of *The Secret History* off the shelf and said, “I think you’d love this.” I smiled, heart skipping. “I probably will.” We sipped coffee. Talked about poetry. I felt my walls thinning, cracking in ways I hadn’t prepared for. And then Julian’s voice dropped. Too calm. Too cold.

The title read, *The Lost Chronicles: A History of the Ancient Magics*. My heart raced as I opened the book, scanning the pages for anything that might be relevant. It wasn’t long before I found a section that made my breath catch in my throat.

the butler spoke from outside. Instantly, Emily went straight to the door and pulled it open to find the butler holding a book. She took the book and gratefully thanked him. “I’d advise you to go through it properly. It covers everything you'll need to know.” Emily bobbed her head, “Thank you.” “Also, I was instructed to show you around before Drew returns. And if it's alright, may I inquire about your breakfast preferences? Mr. Hale specifically asked that I confirm with you before any meal is prepared.”
