I was trying to build a bridge between them, one noble fact at a time. My satchel thumped gently against my side as I searched for a title I hadn’t read yet: The Council of Nine – Founding Politics and Modern Reform. Sexy stuff. Just the kind of bedtime story that might keep me and my mom alive. I rounded the corner into the historical law section and nearly collided with two women whispering between the shelves. "This is your true history, Cassian," he said. "The story of who you really are, and where you come from." I took the book, feeling a sense of trepidation. What secrets was it going to reveal? As I opened the book, I saw that it was filled with strange symbols and diagrams. But one page in particular caught my eye.

Lorraine scoffed and murmured "It better be" Silence fell between us but it wasn't uncomfortable, it was peaceful in a way. "You can leave now” Lorraine said suddenly her tone dismissive. "I'm not in the mood for company" I grinned, standing up "Neither am I, but I'm fluent in silence". With that I grabbed a book from the nearby table and settled back into my chair. As I opened The Secret History by Donna Tart, I could feel Lorraine's eyes on me for a moment before she went back to her laptop.

Like it hadn't required deciding, months ago, that this was worth investing in. I went back to the book in my hand and actually read a page this time. We were in the shop for an hour. Alex bought four books. Three Italian, one English. He showed me the English one, a novel I hadn't heard of, slim with a plain cover. "The woman at the desk recommended it," he said. "She spoke to you." "For about forty seconds. She asked what I was looking for and I said I didn't know and she handed me this." "She's never recommended anything to me."

I think there’s something more to it.” Just then, the bell rang, signaling the end of her break. Seren stood up and tucked the book back under his arm. “I should return this before someone decides I’ve stolen a great work of philosophy.” “Is it?” she asked, nodding toward the book. “Mostly long words about trade routes,” he said. “But who knows? Maybe buried in here is someone else’s secret.” She snorted. “If you find any, come tell me.” “I’ll do my best,” he said, and they went their separate ways in opposite directions.

Ronan’s POV I have one more secret. A secret that shouldn’t be a secret. A secret that I didn’t think would matter in the grand scheme of things. Something I thought was irrelevant at the beginning but now, now it’s starting to look relevant. Then she flashed me a smile and left me alone in the study. I sat in silence for a bit, wondering if maybe it was a good choice after all. Out of curiosity, I wandered over to a book shelf and pulled a book off it. It was heavy, thick, and bound in leather. The History of the Drift Water Pack, it said. I pulled out another one. It was a pack history, too. I went to a different shelf, which contained a volume called The Rules of Royal Etiquette. The book was a beast, with over 2000 pages of small print.

I liked the process of finding each book’s correct spot, and the satisfaction of putting everything in its place. I started off in the fiction section, pausing occasionally to flip through an interesting book here and there. Then, I moved to the biographies, then onto math and science, and finally, I wound up in one of my favorite sections of all: history. The history section was a secret pleasure of mine. I often liked to flip through books on random historical events that I didn’t know about. There was a lot of history to our world, much of it forgotten by the masses, but always documented in large tomes.
