Reasonable. The kind usually intended for children who could sit upright. God. Not babies who occasionally sneezed at random. Fair. Then Lily sat directly in front of Peanut. Reasonable. The kind meant for older kids but that August had started gravitating toward because picture books didn't have enough words. "This one is about a robot who wants to be an astronaut." Carter held up the first book. "And this one is about deep sea creatures. Real ones, not made up. And this one—" He pulled out a thick hardcover. "This one is about how bridges are built. It has diagrams." August's eyes went huge. He took the bridge book with both hands like Carter had given him something precious. Opened to the first page where there was indeed a detailed diagram of bridge architecture. "This is mine? To keep?"

I sit on the edge of the bed and pull the blanket up to her chin. “Story,” she demands softly, eyes already drooping. I smile. “You don’t ask. You order.” She grins, entirely unashamed. I reach for the book she picked earlier, a soft-covered children’s romance about a brave princess and a gentle knight who travel across kingdoms to find each other again. I hadn’t thought much of it when she chose it. Now I wonder if children instinctively gravitate toward truths adults try to avoid. I begin reading, my voice calm, warm, steady.

“I don’t think so. Why, are there some strange books in there?” He shrugged and pulled them out of the bag, flipping them over to read the titles to you. “Well, there’s this one, ‘A Guide to Parenthood: Everything you need to know about being a new parent’, and this one, ‘1001 Games to Play With Your Baby’.” He held them up for you to see, giving you a confused look. You smiled nervously, fidgeting lightly in your seat. “Um, nope, no, those are, uh, those are for you- for us actually I guess.”

“Time for a little story. No pressure, but this one’s important. Gotta have that legacy.” Nik blinked slowly at the pages, completely quiet. He watched intently as I read, voice hushed and monotone. It was a simple book, designed for early readers, full of art in primary colors and a watered-down retelling. The battle for the temple, the miracle of the oil, and the general message of standing up for what’s right. Nik probably didn’t understand any of it yet. He was probably just entranced by the scarlet robe on Judah Maccabee, or the golden gleam of the lamp. But I believed it didn’t matter.

‘GEOGRAPHY AND FAIRYTALE SECTION’ spelled at the top of the shelf and as Gerey scanned from book to book, he remembered a few he'd read at school, ‘Knowing Wabrook's Water Brooks and Bodies’ by Whitaker Flarogue, ‘Sunset at Ingfalls’ by Simponie Gugh, ‘The best habitat for all - Ingfalls - Book One’ by Cuulambs Nicktra, but they were not what he searched for. He narrowed his eyes in concentration as he skimmed tens of book covers before he came across the right material to satisfy his interest, ‘Pixies, Elves, Brownies, Fairies - What Every Kid Needs to Know’ with no author mentioned as the writer. He pulled the book out from among the others with caution and took it to the seat he'd secured

The house was quiet; the nanny had already finished and left, leaving just me and the children. Later that evening, after dinner, I sat with the kids in their room. I picked up one of their storybooks. “Storytime!” Caleb clapped his hands, bouncing on the bed. “Alright, let’s see what we have tonight…” I opened the book. The pages showed colorful drawings of a family of three camping outside under the stars. I cleared my throat and began to read:

Mila could not help but smile at how adorable she was. "Look, if you want my advice, don't do anything you don't like to impress anyone. If you want me to suggest you a couple of good books I don't mind, but you have to love reading so you can enjoy it," Mila spoke. The girl sighed and looked down for a few moments then looked back up at Mila. "You think so?" she asked quietly and Mila nodded with a smile on her face. "Okay, but my mum wants me to give reading a try so...can you recommend me some easy books? Something that won't bore me," the girl requested and Mila nodded.
