"There's one in Capitol Hill open until eleven. We could just browse. No agenda." "Okay. Pick me up in twenty." The bookstore is quiet. Soft lighting. The smell of coffee and paper. We split up. An unspoken agreement to explore separately. I find him thirty minutes later in the poetry section, reading with complete focus. "Find anything?" I ask. He shows me a collection by Mary Oliver. "I didn't know I liked poetry. But this is—it's beautiful." "Buy it." "I will." We leave with five books between us. None of them self-help or business strategy. Just novels and poetry and a cookbook.

Alissa couldn't see the sign from where she was. “You coming?” Michael called. So she walked quickly to where they had disappeared behind bookshelves. “If you want to purchase books on how people behave within society, I would recommend this.” He produced a green and yellow book titled, 'Introduction to Sociology'. “Or if you wish to more look at the history of how society became. I'd recommend this.” He pulled out an orange book with 'The Basics of Anthropology' stamped across the middle. “Thank you,” Michael said, dismissing the worker.

It's hard to focus without her, but I lead Axar into the small library with me as I begin to search. Having been alive for so long I've acquired many books and ancient pieces of literature. Some are in immaculate shape, others are torn segments and several pages, barely tethered together by bits of spine. Many of these are family heirlooms as well, handwritten and handed down to future generations for guidance. Some are my own notes and contacts, roughly scribed here and there and then stuffed back onto shelves. I find several books on banshees and a couple on cambions. I checked liturgy of the Fire, Genealogy of the Unmarked, and the Shadow Rites to see if I would see something concerning what I was. But there was nothing but dry, academic theories.

Whilst all around them society descended into over-regulated conservatism (cinema, television, the Internet, and literature taking the hardest prohibitive hits—people had actually been fined for reading banned ‘supernatural’ books and comics featuring the undead, even those published well before the outbreak), religion had taken an unexpected backseat.
