Thinking at first that she was alone in the library, she made her way through the alcove of books, footsteps soundless over the red rug that lay sprawled beneath her, heading for the ladder that lay against the walls of books. ALPHA KANE POV I knew that Savannah wouldn’t have gone many places. She was stuck with Calvin for her whole life and while coming to my pack, they definitely wouldn’t have made a fun trip out of it. They would have tried to get to safety as soon as possible. When we got out of the car and I saw the look on Savannah’s face, I knew I was right. Her face lit up like it was Christmas morning for a little kid. She’d never been to New Orleans before. And there was so much stuff to do in this city, I was determined to give her new fantastic memories to try and replace the old ones that she can’t stop having nightmares about.

Savannah had no proof, but her gut told her to stay away. She lay back on the bed and closed her eyes. Her mind drifted to Vanessa’s smile, to her soft words. Could she really be trusted? Or was she just another shadow in Cassandra’s plan to destroy everything? Savannah shook her head hard and turned to her side. She had no answers. Only time would tell. *** The next morning came too soon. Savannah rose with heavy eyes, washed her face in cold water, and walked out into the city air. She bought bread from a street cart with the little money she had earned and ate as she walked.

Savannah shook her head slowly. “No… no, that doesn’t make sense. Why me? Why not someone from your world? Someone who already knew how things worked?” Cole clicked the next file. A photo filled the screen Savannah, years ago, sitting at a café with her sketchbook, unaware of the camera aimed at her. Another file opened Savannah leaving her father’s hospital. Another Savannah delivering a design portfolio to a client downtown. Another Savannah crying alone in her car.

Savannah remembered the name from the journal’s missing pages, the ones she'd copied down before Weston took them. It was her only lead. An hour later, she was in a faded green cab in the Lower Quarter, leaning on a cane she hated. The driver didn’t speak. The roads were slick with old rain. The house she arrived at leaned slightly to one side like it remembered hurricanes. Ivy clung to its ironwork like bruises, and somewhere above, wind chimes made of broken keys rang with warning. Maman Therèse opened the door before Savannah knocked. “Come in, chère,” she said, like she’d been expecting her. “You walk like someone whose bones remember war.”

“What are you doing in North Capital? Shouldn’t you be in the university in Imperial Capital?” Savannah said to him as if she were taking a vow, “I dropped out of university. I came here specifically just to save you.” Baby Robbie was astonished by this. “You dropped out because of me? Are you crazy? I’ll make it clear right now, Savannah Jones. I don’t like you.” Then, he sighed sullenly before saying, “See, this is why women are trouble. Those military intelligence division sisters are already enough to make my head explode, yet you’re here trying to join in on the fun?”

Savannah is already gone. The steel door hangs by a thread, screeching. Inside, it’s a graveyard of data. Shelves toppled, glass shattered. But the real hit’s the vault. Sienna’s mother’s life’s work. Sienna stumbles over wreckage, boots crunching glass. “No…” She reaches into the empty vault. “Everything. The maps, the prototypes, the journals. Gone.” I catch a whiff of something under the gunpowder and blood. Savannah’s perfume. A taunt.

The pale blue curtains were halfway open and the sky outside looked overcast but bright. Having spent a good part of yesterday with Alessandra, drinking and then ditching the booze to shop for new sweaters, she felt loved. The kind of loved you feel when you spend time with a friend who gets you. They’d separated in time for Rihanna to come home and send the company laptop and all her files by courier back to Hannibal, Leonard, and Robinson as promised. Then she happily binge-watched her favorite T.V. shows, The Walking Dead and Jane The Virgin, sticking her head in the sand so she didn’t obsess over what Elias and Alessandra were hiding.
