The downtown area was similar to a lot of the towns Dak had visited recently, looking for the perfect place to start his new endeavor, but there was something slightly different about Christmas Falls, something special he couldn’t quite put his finger on. The Christmas decorations hanging from the lamp posts and strung around the trees were the same white lights, red bows, garland, and cartoony characters as everywhere else, seasonal flowers blooming from the flower beds while banners announced where he was and that he was welcome there, but an excitement seemed to hang in the air that he could only describe as a certain kind of Christmas magic he couldn’t ever remember encountering before.

“Come with me.” Winter walked around the library. She then went to the very corner of the room, pressed the room button and made it open. A secret room that holds magic books for tier one witches. Zeath starts with a smile. I glance up from my book to find him staring. “I know, right?” “Did you end up reading the book I gave you on Christmas?” I make to chortle but quickly suppress it. “At first, I abandoned it. But I later read it.” “How was it?” “Extremely exotic.” The chortle finally bursts out. “What the fuck were you thinking when you gifted me that?” Zeath shrugs while letting his smile spread to a grin. “I guess I wanted to spice up the sexual connection between us.”

My cheeks burn as I sit up, shoving my hair back. “Just packing, and packing’s a nightmare for me,” I say, dodging Jess’s suspicious grin who have been my best friend since forever. She knows me too well. “You sure you’re up for this weird family Christmas marathon, or should we just ditch them?” I ask, definitely not feeling the vibe of this so called holiday. Jess flops onto the couch, kicking off her boots. “Free food, snow, and your mom’s wine stash? I’m in. Plus, I gotta see these stepbrothers.”

Christmas was the reading of the book. This Christmas, Don's book was a novel—Norwegian, which was not a coincidence, a novel by the same writer whose essays were in the Norway reading programme. The novel was called The Dark Year, and it was about a man who spent a winter alone in a cabin in the far north of Norway, experiencing the full darkness for the first time. Don had been saving it since September, when he had finished the essays. He had placed it on the shelf above his desk, the designated holding place for the Christmas book, and had not opened it once.
