“Yes, ma’am.” As she moves toward the flat-screen across the room, I return to the suitcase, pulling out one of Liam’s sketchbooks. The cover is bent, the corners smudged with fingerprints, but inside? Dinosaurs. Rainbows. One drawing of a house with three stick figures: one tall, one medium, one small. He’d labeled them—Mommy, Liam, and Daddy Knoxx. I press the sketchbook to my chest and try not to cry. The TV clicks on.

He gave me a small smile and slight nod of the head. "Here read this." A book was put on my lap that looked fun. A book with a king and queen on the cover. I opened it up and a colorful drawing of a dragon and a beautiful princess was on the first page. No words were on it but it still told so much with just the one picture. The next page was even more detailed. I turned back to the first page and than to the next page again. They went together like a flip book but better. "What are you looking at?" A deep and all to familiar voice had me looking up fast. A happy sob left me when Alexander stood in front of me and helped me stand up.

So I just started from the beginning. There were sketches in the book of what the King and Queen looked like as wolves. And they were big and magnificent. They were creatures to be respected. But the drawing showed them in battle. It was done by a brilliant artist showing the battlefield and the King and Queen right in the middle of it. They were winning, obviously. No one could beat them. They could not be challenged. We had read a few chapters of the book and I was starting to get a headache. It was a huge book which outlined the lives of the whole royal family. Which meant all of their 10 children as well. So we decided to stop after a few chapters because I needed a break.

The lines were careful, it looked like hours of work in every stroke. He had captured the exact way my hair fell when I pinned it up. The curve of my lower lip when I concentrated. It was like the book was dedicated entirely to me. I turned to another page and found watercolor studies . The ink drawings were so precise they looked like photographs. My throat closed. I set the sketchbook down and reached for the photographs. The top one was recent: me asleep on the sofa after a long day, head tilted, mouth slightly open. I hadn’t even known he’d taken it.

Opposite and sides of the room sat tall shelves carrying textbooks, all medical. He was always studying. I stopped at the table, looking over the papers. Then I took interest on a particular white sheet of paper sticking out of a large red covered book. On the paper's protruded side was a drawing of some creature. I hate to admit that it actually looks like a werewolf but it did. Picking it out from the book and up to my face, I could clearly see the picture now. It's an image of a werewolf, it's body parts fully labelled.

“That’s it! I quit. I suck.” I turned to look at what she was making. She had gotten 20% of the starting drawing right, but in time lost touch of everything. I laughed lightly and took the book for inspection. The pages fluttered, and behind the unfinished busy subway, I saw a few more colourful drawings and sketches. I turned the page, and was greeted by the sight of a huge green tree. At first glance it looked really majestic. Because all you will notice at first are the thick heavy branches. But in time, when you keep looking, you will see the differences.

I knelt across my bed-side table, and opened its drawer, a bundle of papers sewn together laid still. I snatched the drawing book, and started flipping its pages. There was no doubt that they looked alike. But as I stared at the image I last drew, I noticed how they were two different individuals. Their grins. The boy on a robe had a crooked smile.
