Not trembling like mine. For a fraction of a second, I hesitate. This is the point of no return. Then I place my hand in his. His fingers close around mine. Warm. Firm. Grounding. The contact sends a strange calm through me. He leans slightly closer. From the outside, it probably looks romantic. Intimate. Perfect. But only I hear the quiet murmur meant just for me. “Breathe.” Two syllables. Low. Controlled. My lungs finally obey. I hadn’t realised I’d been holding my breath.

She pats her abdomen for emphasis. Once she closes the door to her room behind her, she finds herself pacing back and forth, desperate for something to do. She can't seem to sit for too long. Her eye catches a book she's been wanting to read. Reading hasn't exactly fit her mood lately. In one swift motion, she grabs the novel off the shelf, jumps into bed, and opens to the first chapter.

I was in so much disbelief, that I could feel the soft air coming in through the door as it blew against the basement of my mouth, reminding me that I still had my mouth left open. I closed it. Tried to draw in a deep breath over the shared pain in my chest before exhaling painfully. “My business is my—” I paused, realizing I was finally at the bridge.

My breath became shallow. What the fuck?

Daphne's POV I couldn’t breathe. Not really. Not in the way a person was supposed to — deep and steady, from the belly and up through the lungs. I was breathing in shallow gulps, like someone whose head had been pushed just beneath the surface of water. Like someone barely hanging on.

The images cling to the corners of my vision refusing to fade. The air feels thick, pressing down on me, choking me as if it wasn’t quite real, hands trembling uncontrollably. “Breathe Tish, inhale, hold exhale.” I hear Kim’s gentle voice guiding me. My breaths come shallow, jagged at first, like I am learning to breathe again slowly. I loosen my grip on the mattress, willing my pulse to slow down. Eyes closed, I breathe in the faint scent of rain filtering through the small cracked window, mixing with the stale air of the room. “Breathe in and out.”
