My breath came shallow and sharp, each inhale scraping. “Easy.” Kaden’s voice. Right there. Close. Lena presses her lips together tightly, the color draining from her face until it looks almost lifeless. For a long moment, she doesn’t speak. The silence stretches between us, thick and suffocating. I can feel my heartbeat in my ears, pounding relentlessly, echoing my fear. Why the hell is she taking so long? Can’t she just come out with it and put me out of my misery? The door to the emergency room opened and a doctor came out of there with a face that could be said to be not too happy. Daniel, who had been sitting there waiting, hurriedly got up and approached the doctor. "How is it, Doc?" asked Daniel. He could not cover his anxious face at all. Audrey was also standing near the doctor trying to hear the results of his examination of Kenzie. The doctor let out a long sigh before saying, "The child is experiencing severe shortness of breath because the anesthetic began to work and spread to all important organs in his body."
