“I am looking forward to finding out.” I looked at him. At the Alpha who had been unmade and remade and was looking forward to finding out what he chose in the clean ground. “Me too,” I said. We drove in the quiet of the first morning of the beginning. Blackthorn packhouse appeared on the horizon at the specific hour of the morning when the light was fully committed to the day. Not pre-dawn grey. Not the tentative light of the first morning. Full morning. The specific brightness of a day that has decided to be a day and is being one.

Instead, I turned toward the window and spoke, quietly and casually, as if thinking aloud. “They really went overboard with the lighting tonight,” I murmured. “It’s too bright for sleep.” A pause. Then....so soft it almost felt imagined, a voice slid into my awareness. Not through sound alone, but through familiarity. “Brightness can be adjusted,” Adrian said. “But only if the room allows it.” My fingers curled slowly into the blanket. I did not smile. “They won’t,” I replied calmly, my gaze on the darkened garden beyond the glass. “This house likes everything visible.”

Lara recalled the cluster of security men converging on the helipad, blurred glimpses of an incredibly large white villa, and heat that only increased the nonstop pounding behind her temples. Jet lag had finally caught up with her. A rueful grimace slanted her face as she gingerly slid out of bed to gratefully appreciate that the ground beneath her feet was no longer rocking. It was dark outside. Locating the bedside light, Lara glanced at her watch. “8 pm… Are you kidding me?” The housekeeper, at least Lara assumed the warm, matronly woman who had come to her assistance was the housekeeper, had been a merciful savior. She had taken charge, banishing Christophe and helping Lara to bed.

I looked in the mirror to see a frustrated teenager of medium height, skinny, with medium breasts, pale complexion slightly freckled, green eyes that looked like cat's, curly, dark blond hair that, still wet with water, was now a bit floppy. My eyes were still red from crying, and the shadows under my eyes and a haggard face clearly showed how much sleeplessness I had been having lately. Seeing that, I wanted to break the mirror.

The morning light should have made everything clearer. It streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Blackwood penthouse in pale gold ribbons, touching silk sheets and polished marble, softening the edges of a night that had left too many sharp ones behind. Morning was supposed to be forgiving like that. It was supposed to bring reason, distance, perspective. Instead, it brought clarity of the most dangerous kind.

Elena ventures into Astrid's room with precise timing, the clock hands aligning perfectly at 6:00 AM. In that serene hour, the morning light filters through the curtains, infusing the room with a tender, almost poetic luminosity. It was as if the dawn itself had decided to paint a masterpiece within those four walls. Astrid lay swathed in her bed, the tendrils of sleep still caressing her like a lover's gentle snuggle. Elena, determined yet mindful of her sister's need for rest, initiated her wake-up mission with the lightest of taps on Astrid's shoulder.

' He switched off the bedroom light and left, treading softly. As the early morning light streamed in through the window, Madelyn slowly stretched her body, her eyes still closed. The sudden blare of her phone alarm shattered the morning quiet. She was quick to hush it. Not one to laze around, she got up, feeling refreshed and eager for the day's promises.

- grandma assured her fervently. Miyuki only managed to nod her head slightly, because somewhere in the distance she heard the increasingly clear sound of her alarm clock. Eventually the room and her grandmother disappeared, replaced with darkness, and shortly thereafter, Miyuki opened her eyes and was briefly blinded by the morning sun shining through the curtains. ~~~~~~~~~

The whispers and side talks were becoming too much. I could see my brother from the corner of my eye dragging my mom away persuading her to continue the party with him. I rushed into my room and locked the door and lay on the ground. Elektra just kept looking at me from a distance. Alcinder got up from my bed and lay on the ground, Elektra joined us and together we looked at the ceiling. We had drawn the curtains earlier and the room was dark. But the ceiling glowed with the fake constellation of the planets and stars. It was calming.

I felt rushed of coldness running through me, it made me reach for Walter as he wrapped me in his arm, rubbing my shoulder and giving me the warmth that I needed. "I need to ask my elders, this is way beyond my knowledge." She got up and reached above her kitchen cabinets, and retrieved some candles, then she closes all the shades and curtains making the room dimmer for her needs. Walter and I sat in silence in front of her as she does her thing, minutes went by as she communicates with her elders then the candles unexpectedly are blown out by a gust of wind, darkness surrounds us immediately. Walter grabbed my hand immediately, assuring me that I was safe, that he was next to me.
