The afternoon light was coming in directly now, the amber bars across the honey floors, the brick at the back glowing in the way it glowed when the sun committed. Maya was right. You couldn't hedge in direct light. I opened the retainer contract and began to read.

Morning Light The soft morning light streamed through the glass windows, casting a pale glow across Chase’s imposing desk. The man sat there in silence, his deep eyes clouded with thought. Across from him, Zane waited quietly, noticing the dark tension in his boss’s expression and wisely keeping his mouth shut. The room was still—so still that only one being dared to break the silence. A small robot, AI Doc, blinked its bright blue eyes and wagged its thin metallic tail. After reporting the weather, it began reading the day’s headlines in its cheerful synthetic voice.

Bright woke up next morning when a strong breeze displaced the curtains and the sunlight shined bright in his eyes. He stretched and saw that the breeze came from the balcony whose door was open. Ash was awake. Bright got up and rubbed his eyes to clear his vision when he saw Ash who was adjusting his thigh holsters while it rested on the sofa. In his half-asleep state, Bright forgot the trouble in their paradise and wanted to greet Ash when suddenly realization dawned upon him and he sighed, "Never mind". He whispered, rather loudly, attracting Ash attention. On any other day, Ash lips usually curved into a smile seeing Bright but today, he stared at him blankly.

The bed, on the other hand, was made of varnished wood and solidly covered with blue linen, painted with pink and purple flowers. The room belonged to Selene Monroe, a teenage girl with long black hair, navy blue eyes, medium height and a slim figure. She was named after the Greek goddess of the moon, and it matched the color of her eyes. Selene was just sleeping on her bed and from under the duvet, which was pulled literally over the head, there were unruly black strands of hair spreading out across the pillow. There was a brief silence on the other end before Mom spoke up with concern. "Isn't your seventh anniversary with Lucas coming up? Shouldn't you stay with him for that special occasion?" I let out a bitter laugh. "That won't be necessary." After hanging up, I booked my flight. At dawn, Lucas pushed open the door to our house and walked in, looking a little worn out. When he saw me sitting in the living room, he smiled and walked over. "I spent the whole night observing the skies. I'm so exhausted," he said.

"I heard you lost your sight in an accident. I was once blind too. I understand what it feels like to struggle in the dark." She suddenly grasped my hand, and in the darkness, I could feel her smiling boldly and triumphantly. "But luckily, I was fortunate. I received a donation from a kind person and have regained my vision. I'm sure you will too." I couldn't see Indya's face, but I could easily imagine the smug expression she must've worn at that moment. Indya moved close to Anthony and sat directly on his lap. "What are you doing?" I heard Anthony's voice, low and strained, followed by the rustling of fabric.

I wake with a start, sitting up and gasping for air. My heart lurches in my chest and my eyes struggle to focus. But everything is dark. Completely dark. I can’t see a thing. “Callie.” Lucas’s voice rings out, echoing next to me. He sits up and snakes his arms around me, pulling me back to the mattress. Back to him. “What’s that noise?” I rasp. “Automatic blinds,” he explains. “They go down at four AM every morning. They’re light-tight and made out of metal. It’s a little loud.”
