1 – The Hollow Tower The elevator shafts no longer worked. Most of the tower’s glass had been blasted out during the citywide siege, leaving the upper floors exposed to the cold evening air. Smoke from distant fires drifted through the shattered windows, curling around Kane Veylor like a crown of ruin. The city below was slipping from his grasp — and he could feel it. The chants of Garden Below echoed faintly through the night, the sound carried upward by the same wind that once carried his commands.

"But they'll still call you queen." "A queen of what?" I asked, a bitter tear clearing a pale line through the soot on my cheek. "Look at the gates, Ethan. There's nothing left but the ash." The main tower finally gave way, falling into the central nave of the cathedral with a roar that shook the entire harbor, a massive column of black dust rising up into the purple sky until it completely blocked out the morning sun.
