As everyone chuckled, I continued to shovel pancakes into my mouth, trying to drown out the playful banter.
Mrs Hamilton suddenly shifted the conversation, causing everyone's expressions to become serious.
"So... I want to visit my son," she said.
An awkward silence fell over the room, and all eyes turned to Steve, whose expression hardened.
"Stop kidding, Mom. I see you every day. Why would you want to visit again?" Steve replied, pretending not to understand her request.
This exchange had become a daily ritual. Mrs Hamilton would plead to see her son, only to be met with resistance from everyone, who feared it might traumatize her again.
